For our two-part fifth anniversary special issue, Trends in Chemistry is amplifying rising stars and emerging leaders in chemistry today. Our cover for Part II continues on from Part I, highlighting some of the milestones and many paths taken on the 'great career race' for early-career scientists today. Many thanks to Ivonna Dumanyan, Kaaren Hanson, Carol Bartz, Haibei (Happy) Wang, and Maegan Spencer for bringing so much wisdom, honesty, encouragement, and fun to the DTech Scholars Program students and alumni this weekend! Talking with such gifted leaders in small groups was incredibly inspiring, and while it wasn't possible to capture every key take-away, here's a start... 🔑 Double-down on your strengths 🔑 Your fear is what will hold you back the most 🔑 You can learn more from a bad manager than a good one because you’re constantly faced with what you don’t want to do 🔑 It’s most fun to be in the middle of things where you’re making something 🔑 Get to know the people around you at work. You learn from others and get votes for your ideas one at a time 🔑 When negotiating compensation, if you feel anxious about your request, you’re probably asking for the right amount 🔑 Be diligent to understand who are your promoters and detractors. Find the people who can really see you and your strengths 🔑 You can learn how to do a better job of making challenging decisions by building a sense of self, following a disciplined approach to understanding other people and situations, and using intuition 🔑 Don’t inherit other people’s definitions of success 🔑 As a leader, you need to figure out how to encourage people to tell you the truth. Don’t ever be afraid to learn what people think of you. You can always decide whether you want to change based on your values and goals #leadership, #womenintech, Duke University

Invited Assistant Professor @ ISCTE-IUL & Ass. Professor @ Lusiada University | Sustainability, Ethics, Work Systems Design
My experience as a ISCTE Business School professor has enabled me to see the positive impact of our ethics and sustainability courses. These initiatives educate and inspire a new generation of responsible leaders. Seeing students embrace responsible practices inspires hope that they will bring about meaningful change in the business world. This aligns with PRME principles of Purpose, Values, Method, Research, Partnership, and Dialogue.

Executive Dean of Creativity and the Arts @ Shenandoah U | Finder of Mischief Makers | Community Builder | Author & Concert Artist
🌻 Leading Driven & High-Performing Faculty & Individuals "Humans are not thinking machines that feel; we are feeling animals that think." This reality, often exaggerated in those with extraordinary drive and intellect, has profound implications for those of us leading communities of exceptionally driven/focused folk. It's no secret that brilliance rarely comes wrapped in neat packages of reason and sensibility. Instead, it’s often cloaked in generative tensions, impulses for mischief, and racing intellects/creative energies that defy conventional logic. So, what’s our role as leaders? My sense is that it certainly includes the following: 🔹 Affirming Bottom Lines: Clarity and structure are essential, but flexibility in approach matters just as much. 🔹 Embracing Mischief: When possible, we can channel the disruptive energy of creative minds towards innovation and positive outcomes. 🔹 Limiting Harm: Balance the brilliance with boundaries, and direct energies away from overwhelming disruption. 🔹 But above all, hiring people oriented towards kindness. In a world where Paleolithic emotions meet godlike technology, the human touch is paramount. Your thoughts? How do you lead those who challenge the very logic of conventional thinking? 👉 More about my recent book, "Don'ts for Deans and Academic Leaders," HERE: https://lnkd.in/eBGFUFte #Leadership #HigherEducation #Creativity #Innovation #AcademicLeadership #HumanBehavior

Last night’s debate wasn't just about preparation and policies, it was about managing emotions and responses. In life sciences, this holds true daily: Don’t get sidetracked by initial funding announcements. Don’t get depressed by experimental setbacks. Slow, consistent progress—1% better each day—drives breakthroughs. The leaders in both politics and science know that steady persistence wins the race. #LifeSciences #EmotionalControl #Breakthroughs #Leadership #SteadyGrowth #ScienceAndProgress #1PercentBetter #ConsistencyWins

Harvard broke something open. Surrounded by so many inspiring and dedicated leaders at the vanguard of social impact, confronting the deeply entrenched systematic problems plaguing society, I wondered what I was doing there. I have been in the arts sector my entire life at all levels, and now, 30 years in, a new fire within provokes me. Surrounded by 160+ international leaders who confront existential issues daily, something in me broke, hard...in the best way. I know the arts change lives, transform communities, and provide a forum for understanding humanity, but I want more...much more. The status quo is not enough, it is NEVER enough nor acceptable. My experience at HBS broke me and dared me. Before me now: to challenge the status quo of my sector, "fail the expectations of others" (in the right ways), and, with abundant humility, forge a path for growth and vision.

I highly recommend checking out this insightful piece by my colleague, Jason Scherschligt, who delves deep into the metaphoric language we use in building software products. If you’re intrigued by how language influences our approach to product design and management, this is a must-read! #ProductManagement #Innovation #ThoughtLeadership
