What is the outlook for long-duration energy storage (LDES)? ⚡ ⏳ 🔋 Today, Li-ion #batteries account for over 90% of global installed BESS capacity but mostly focusing on short duration applications of about two to four hours. 🌊 Long-duration energy storage, usually considered to have more than 8 hours capacity, is still in early stages: 88.5% of LDES projects have not yet started operations. Apart of pumped-hydro which has been around for decades, alternative technologies haven't been economically viable due to high costs and low demand for long-duration storage. 🌥 🌬 With lowering costs of batteries and increasing penetration of renewables, the outlook for LDES is changing. Countries start to include longer-duration storage in their national energy strategies (e.g. Italy) to address intermittency and ensure grid reliability. The use case of LDES could be when both wind and solar are unavailable for several days. 💶 Still, Li-ion batteries may never be cheap enough to become the go-to technology for multi-day storage. Alternatives include compressed air energy storage (CAES), liquid air energy storage, sodium-ion or flow batteries. Further investments in these technologies are needed to prepare them for commercial scale when the need for LDES arises. Long-duration storage will also need new business models and control strategies.
