Indigenous Peoples have operated their own versions of environmental markets for centuries. Today, the relationship between Indigenous Communities and Western climate and nature markets are varied — some communities actively resist these engagements, raising valid concerns around the conflict of Western market forces and Indigenous life systems, while others actively engage to shape these markets to better align with the cultural and ecological needs and context of their communities. In our latest report, spearheaded by Nkwi Flores and Lauren Serota, we highlight the critical role Indigenous Communities play as knowledge-holders in our collective effort to maintain a habitable Earth. This report offers key reflections, resources, and recommendations for project developers, environmental non-profits, philanthropies, and corporations who are working with or near Indigenous land and ecosystems. The report explores: The limitations of current engagement models, including how to improve the use of Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) The imbalances in business relationships and compensation, particularly in light of the public value of nature data Knowledge-sharing and partnership-building practices that can lead to more harmonious and equitable collaboration Each section provides specific recommendations on engagement, business models, and capacity building, backed by quotes and insights directly from interviewees. We also include examples of projects and practices that have successfully integrated these values. This work is an invitation for all stakeholders to reconsider how we engage with Indigenous Communities, not just as stewards of land but as vital partners in the ongoing fight for climate resilience and environmental justice.  As we are headed into #COP16 we encourage you to read the full report and join the conversation. In one week we’ll be having our Green Accountability Technology Accelerator Demo Day! At the beginning of the year we joined forces with The World Bank’s The Global Partnership for Social Accountability to address the climate finance gap. Recognizing poor reporting practices, fragmented data, lack of transparency, and limited citizen oversight- all which increase risk of corruption and misspending, we created the Green Accountability Technology Accelerator and set out to find solutions that leverage emerging technologies rooted in community involvement. We received an overwhelming response, attracting 174 applications from 54 countries. And selected four exceptional teams: 🌿 Kapital app by Savimbo 🌿 Integrity Action 🌿 Namunyak by Space4Innovation 🌿 Altruistech Innovation These teams stood out for their close collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, commitment to developing open source tools, and their innovative use of data and technology. For the past five months, we’ve been working with four teams from around the world to place local stewards at the center of climate finance. Earthshot nominations are now open! As an official nominator of the Earthshot Prize we are on the search for innovative solutions to five different but connected Earthshot challenges: 🌿Protect and restore nature 🫁Clean our air 🌊Revive our oceans ♻️Build a waste-free world 🌍Fix our climate Who should apply? Solutions beyond idea/concept stage with demonstrated environmental impact to date.
