How we took Simon from 5 months of no sales to 19 new clients. When we first spoke Simon was a little worried about the business. Last year it had been smashing it. Sales coming in, things moving well. But this year things seemed to have slowed down. Eventually resulting in a 5 month drought of sales. First we identified the problem: As often happens, the programme was becoming more valuable and packed with more stuff… But with that the offer was becoming much less clear… It caused a 5 month drought in sales. We made 3 big changes: 1. We used The Multi-Tier Offer to create clearer tiers. First of all, we engineered a tier that was easier for people to say Yes too. This wasn’t actually cheaper at all, we just made sure to present a smaller number on the front end (not forcing upfront payments) and made the commitment a little easier. 2. We articulated a clear offer that made sense instantly. Using all the value packed in his programme, together we picked out *the* most important outcome he could give his clients first before anything else… We asked “Using all this great information, what OUTCOME that will solve a problem can we give your clients quickly?” We came up with a specific outcome, we understood why they’d want it, we promised to deliver it within 8 weeks. 3. We ran a clear launch with deadlines and scarcity. Most coaches sell very passively. Posting ‘value’ and hoping a prospects asks for more information. The final thing we did was planned out a short and intense launch sequence with a clear deadline. The result? 10x new tier sales. 9x 1-1 programme sales. THIS is why being able to Close Sales is so, so important to me. It's everything.  I would not be living this life if I had not made closing sales a priority.  During that short window I've made multiple Vibrant Connections sales, London event sales, and I expect my 3rd and final VIP to secure her place too.  I've also been supporting 6 clients individually to close THEIR sales as well as do my marketing and manage my team.  I wouldn't have my fabulous clients had I not 'sold' to them. This week, coincidentally, I have been close to two completely separate misdirected sales tactics. Selling is a hard world and I admire anybody who puts themselves out there. But dishonesty and pressure tactics will not fly with me. It has got me thinking about sales and the brilliant team at Battersea Arts Centre who drive our events business forwards. It’s a world I’ve been in for over 10 years but I rarely stop to take stock of the things I’ve learned. So posting here to consolidate my thoughts: 🫶People First. You’re dealing with individuals so treat them as such. Respect their individual personalities, approaches and needs. 📈The sale is the first part of a much longer journey. Client retention and repeat business is your foundation stone. So do not forget your client the moment the contract is signed. Take care of them. Check in. And focus on delivery as much as you focus on sales. ❤️Believe in the product. I believe wholeheartedly in BAC. So be proud of it and know your worth. Stand firm in that when negotiation comes calling. ⛔️Pressure tactics do not work. Rushing a client to get over the line will not lead to a happy customer. 💷Get the price and the product right. Be open about costs. Know where you have wiggle room and where you do not. ⭐️Some people just have the gift. One of my great inspirations in this sphere is Naomi Wilson - Harris who returns from maternity leave in a few short weeks. She has the ability to connect with people and communicate the values of BAC in a way that is truly magic to witness. I’m so excited to welcome her back as our Head of Event Sales soon. And to sales people - please continue to take risks and put yourselves out there. There are many knock backs along the way but also brilliant breakthroughs. In sales, there are no Ari Golds. You have to be your own super agent. Here are 3 moves that will help you land that new dream job or negotiate a better territory: First, here’s some inspiration… In 2021, Kevin De Bruyne, a top Belgium footballer, negotiated a $132M contract with Manchester City…without an agent. 3 years ago, he used various analytics platforms to present his value to the club. The report headlined with: “De Bruyne’s output is amongst the best in the Premier League, particularly for chance creation metrics.” When comparing that output alongside the wages of other players, De Bruyne appeared underpaid compared to some of Europe’s top attacking players, who earned more than the Belgian but contributed far less according to the metrics. This landed him a 5-year, multi-million dollar contract with a hefty raise in his wages. To be your own super agent in sales, implement these 3 simple moves: 1. GET ORGANIZED Have regular strategic check-ins with yourself: - Annual strategy - Monthly updates - Weekly organization - Daily planning & reviews The insights you’ll be able to pull from these regular routines will be valuable. And they could be the difference between a new role or an improved comp plan that pays you hundreds of thousands more over the next 12 months. 2. KNOW YOUR NUMBERS There are 3 numbers that reign supreme in strategic sales: - Win rate - Deal size - Deal cycle As a part of the monthly update, dial in on these numbers and see how you’re tracking against your own performance. Use this 2-step system: → Pull in all Closed/Won opportunities into a single sheet to review your overall performance at a single glance → Create a new sheet for each month to drill into detailed metrics: – Win rate, average deal size, and average deal cycle – Start date and how many months you’re in the role – Total quota, bookings (ARR), and achievement – Number of logos and opportunities won – Number of logos and opportunities lost – Personal earnings and hourly rate Steal my Personal Sales Stats Matrix: https://buff.ly/3HE23oQ 3. CREATE YOUR NARRATIVE Dissect your wins and losses by writing out what you learned from each opportunity. Then, create a narrative around a smarter plan using these insights for the next quarter or year ahead. For instance, when I did this in my strategic sales role, I learned my best deals were in the Fortune 100 - 200 segment. That meant I could have an intelligent conversation with my leaders when they were pressing me to pursue bigger companies on the list. But without the data, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to ask for more accounts in my sweet spot range, which would have translated to slower deals, less revenue for the company, and lower commissions for me. Remember: Don't let your company drive the narrative. Let YOUR numbers tell the fully story. Just like Kevin (without the help of Ari Gold).

If you are only concerned about making a one-time sale today, you have failed at Sales 101. As a salesman, you are in this for the long haul, so remember that sales and client relations go hand in hand. Sales refers to exchanging a product or service for money, while client relations are about building relationships and bringing value to each client so they trust you. Your prospect will choose to buy from the person they TRUST the most. Trust needs to be built. Yes, it can be done in a short cold call if you've discovered their pain point and revealed your ability to relieve them. Since you found their pain point and offered to relieve it, the trust could have been built quickly to make the sale in minutes, even without the relationship. Just don't make a sale and forget about them. Begin to build a relationship so they continue to trust you and return to you for future sales. You can even be like the old-school, greasy used car salesman who says anything to get the sale. Sure, the salesman met his quota with this tactic, but most clients will not return because of a lack of trust. A one-time sale is nice, but what is better is having a client who trusts you and provides you with a long-term relationship of continued sales while telling his friends. Not all prospects can or should be sold on the first meeting. Continue to bring value and integrity so the client will trust you and eventually buy from you once their economic climate improves or their needs manifest. I'll save that one) If there’s one thing in sales and marketing that makes my skin crawl, it’s this… “If you aren’t prepared to BANKRUPT yourself in order to succeed, then clearly you don’t REALLY want it, do ya?!” It. Drives. Me. Crazy. Dangerous narratives like this are exactly why: A. Desperate biz owners make bad decisions B. Sales and marketing get a baaaaaaaaad rep Which is why I’ll never teach you to sell in this way. Have you ever gotten called out for offering an "end-of-quarter discount"? I did, and that's what this F@&K Up Friday is about. ♦ Situation: I was feeling great after hitting my sales target for the quarter, but the team was falling short by just under 10%. As a result, my manager implemented the classic “end-of-quarter discount” strategy, instructing us to offer discounts on our best-case deals to close the gap. ♦ Issue: I went all in to help the team, offering a discount to a top prospect, only to be confronted with the question: “How dumb do you think I am that I’d fall for your end-of-quarter discount?” As people say these days, Big Yikes 😩 He proceeded to give me a lecture on pressure-based sales tactics, which I listened to because, quite frankly, I deserved it. This attempt to fix the team’s shortfall was met with skepticism and highlighted a lack of authenticity. ♦ Fallout The prospect was unimpressed, and I realized that pushing for discounts blindly could erode my credibility and alienate potential clients. While I did manage to close another deal with a prospect who needed to spend their budget, it was more luck than strategy. When I proposed the discount with the EOQ close date, she told me that they were at the end of their budget cycle. She had to use her budget, or she would lose it, and the discount meant she could afford to move forward while using up her budget. Fortunately, the 20% discount aligned perfectly with her remaining budget. Before this offer, she was considering a competitor who was her second choice for functionality but became their vendor of choice solely because of price. ♦ Lesson I learned two key lessons on What Not To Do: -- Don’t push end-of-quarter discounts without understanding their impact; it can create pressure and damage relationships. Most people see right through it, and it ruins your credibility. -- Improve your discovery process to grasp the prospect’s budget, timeline, and urgency. This understanding can lead to more strategic, timely closes. In the deal that I did close, I failed to do proper discovery initially. I almost lost this deal because of it. I got lucky that I proposed the discount, didn't ruin my credibility, and that the discount they needed fell within the range of our approved discount range. So, where did the team end our quarter? Did we close the gap? Nope. While I hit my target, the team as a whole closed the quarter at 98%. Ultimately, I learned to save discounts for situations where they genuinely add value and ensure your sales approach is strategic and sincere.
