In one's research journey, it is not everyday that one wakes up to email bearing good news. Glad I woke up to this one, which technically isn't even my own achievement! That aside, it was wonderful to be one of the reviewers for Society & Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies, published by Brill, and to see the article all set for publication!

More ducks? Only one way. More eggs ➡️ more hatched eggs ➡️ more ducklings fledge to enter fall flight. Tune in to see how sound policy can deliver this proven approach at scale 🟰 more ducks!
Delta Waterfowl's President and Chief Scientist, Dr. Frank Rohwer, will speak to Congress on behalf of H.R. 6854 —The Habitat Enhancement Now, or HEN, Act. 🦆 If passed, the HEN Act would provide funding for the installation and maintenance of Hen Houses in crucial breeding habitats and the enhancement of nesting and brood habitat in California. Such funding would boost nest success and result in more ducks over your decoys each fall. Join the live stream below at 9:15 AM CST to listen in as he presents his testimony. https://lnkd.in/gccMCKCf

When REACh is revised to include endocrine endpoints, how will the new challenges be met? And how many animals will be required to fulfill the new requirements? The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) as well as my former colleagues James Wheeler and Lauren Kent PhD, DABT, ERT have released a paper, available as a pre-proof, to spell out the issues. https://lnkd.in/eB-wSn7u

EARA was happy to chair and present this session on Transparency Agreements in Europe at the recent Understanding Animal Research #Openness24 conference! The session featured several members of the EARA Board and EARA ambassadors, who each spoke about the progress of these openness initiatives in their respective countries and their impact on improving transparency with the public on animal research. #EARA #TransparencyAgreement #AnimalResearch #OpenAnimalResearch
The final session from the conference discussed openness across Europe! Our speakers included Javier Guillen with AAALAC International, Ana Isabel Moura Santos with Nova Medical School, Elisabeth Herrero with European Animal Research Association (EARA) Belgium, Serban Morosan with Gircor, Valeska Stephan with Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation, Havermans, Monique with EARA Netherlands, Xavier Warot with École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, and Hannah Hobson with UAR. We learned about openness initiatives taking place in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and right here in the UK. Thank you to Kirk Leech with European Animal Research Association (EARA) for chairing this session, and thank you to everyone who shared with us the best practices in openness that are occurring across the globe! #Openness24

Good literature searches are an integral part of planning animal research and testing. This is where hashtag #systemicreview comes in. Systemic reviews of published animal experiments are a useful aid in planning research and can also be used to extract new conclusions from experiments which have already been performed (so-called Synthesis of Evidence), thereby avoiding the need for new ones. This summer University of Zurich, in collaboration with hashtag Norecopa and the University of Bergen (UiB) are putting on a program led by experts in Systematic Review. Check out amazing program here: https://lnkd.in/eJTMxkX3 and register here: https://lnkd.in/eAW2uuUh to you learn all the steps needed to perform a systematic review of your own, including how to perform literature searches, how to manage references, how to screen abstracts, and risk of bias.

Are you planning to attend the Plant and Animal Genome Conference in January 2025 #PAG32 ? You can now submit an abstract to present your work at one of the Phytobiomes Alliance workshops: - “Exploring Phytobiomes” workshop | Sunday 12 January, 4:00-6:10pm This workshop will feature talks exploring various aspects of research to understand phytobiomes systems. - “The Uniqueness and Commonalities Between Plant, Animal and Soil Microbiomes” workshop | Tuesday 14 January, 4:00-6:10pm This workshop will explore the interconnections between plants, animals, and soils, and their shared environments. Research related to interactions with people as defined in the One Health approach are also of interest. Presentations should demonstrate how knowledge gained from these diverse communities can lead to a general understanding of agriculturally related microbiomes. Abstract submission deadline: Tuesday 5 November 2024, 23:59 US Eastern Time. 👉More information: https://lnkd.in/g4p-DgHP

February Lab Animal Column: The Weights of Refinement and Flexibility Upon hearing of a new procedure that may be a refinement to her current experimental practices, an investigator proposes a pilot study to evaluate its effectiveness in comparison to her traditional methods. She proposes to run this pilot study alongside her regular studies. The IACUC wonders: Should they require the PI to stop all research until the pilot study is completed, or can she continue her work while evaluating the possible new alternative? https://lnkd.in/ga2qccjP

In the fast-paced world of academia, where success is often measured by publications and citations, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Also, the demands in the field of research can be extremely overwhelming-- long hours, constant pressure to publish, and the ever-present fear of failure can take a toll on even the strongest minds. Through the wonderful journey of being in touch with an animal or rescuing one, researchers emerge stronger, more compassionate, and better equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead. Amidst the chaos, the simple act of caring for an animal can serve as a powerful antidote to stress and anxiety. Read More: Link in Comment Section Repost from my article at: https://lnkd.in/dxiX3tYp

🔬 Discover the interesting work by Thomas Freimuth from the German Research-Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) as he shares the outline, methods, and the expected outcomes of his Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) performed at University of Borås under the supervision of Amir Mahboubi Soufiani and Negar Baserehtaromsary! It's a fascinating look into the conversion of food and feed by-products into valuable feed components for larvae of the black soldier fly, a promising future feed protein source! 👇 Watch the following video to learn more about Thomas's research and the impact of STSM programs. #STSM #research
