When drought and climate change left kids hungry and school attendance dwindling in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, community leaders took action. With funds generated from protecting one of the planet's most vital forests, they started a school feeding program that has fed nearly 35,000 children in 90 schools in just over a year. @ Conservation.org, @mwct_kenya and @chyluredd support these efforts that helps indigenous people and local communities benefit financially from protecting forest. Among the hardest hit is the Topanga Creek area, which lies directly in the path of the Palisades fire. The Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains (RCDSMM) is on the front lines of recovery and restoration. Their vital work includes rescuing endangered species like the tidewater goby and steelhead trout, whose habitats and water quality in Topanga Creek have been severely impacted. But they can’t do it alone. The nonprofit Captains for Clean Water commissioned a study of the effects of that disaster “looking only at the economic impacts, the hemorrhaging, southwest Florida would experience if a harmful algal bloom event similar to those in 2018 and in 2006 occurred again,” its literature explained. It did not mention the east coast, especially in Martin and Palm Beach Counties where losses were also extreme. Southwest Florida losses alone could look like this, the report says: • COMMERCIAL AND RECREATION FISHING: $460 million. • JOBS lost in the coastal economy: 43,094. • OUTPUT reduction from the coastal economy: $5.2 billion. • PROPERTY VALUES lost: $17.8 billion. • VALUE OF OUTDOOR RECREATION lost: $8.1 billion. Matt DePaolis, the environmental policy director for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, where so much environmental and economic damage occurred during the 2018 event, points out that the amendment is not radical. “This just gives a cause to action for rights that theoretically we already have, but now we don’t have a way to enact those. "Why replant after a wildfire? What if it burns again?" Our team at the Arbor Day Foundation is regularly asked these kinds of questions. While understandable, they are rooted in the misconception that the loss of a forest is simply the loss of landscape decor. The risk of planting trees in an area that might one day possibly be struck by fire does not outweigh the risk of losing everything the forest affords us. We need bold leaders to step out from the crowd and help set a path toward restoration. To rewrite the destiny of an area marked by devastation. To grow hope on a planet that urgently needs our help. Corporations have the influence and resources to enact lasting, positive change.
