BREAKING NEWS : The United Nations Pledges Immediate Assistance To Borno Flood Victims Following the devastating floods that displaced thousands in Maiduguri, Borno State, the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have pledged urgent relief for the affected communities. In a statement released on Sunday by Oluseyi Soremekun, National Information Officer of the UN Information Centre, the UN emphasized its commitment to providing immediate support. The floods, which began on September 9, have worsened the already dire humanitarian crisis in Borno State, leaving thousands without homes. It would be recalled that, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engineer Joseph Utsev, revealed that the recent severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, was caused by an overflow of the Ngadda River, not the collapse of the Alau Dam as initially suspected. A high-level delegation, led by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, visited Maiduguri on Saturday. The team included representatives from UN agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society. They met with local residents, officials, and Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts. “The flood-affected people are facing a crisis within a crisis, as the floods occurred during a severe food insecurity and malnutrition crisis. "I witnessed firsthand the devastation and hardship caused by the flooding, including the destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure. I also saw the suffering of the affected communities,” Fall stated. The flooding, considered the worst in 30 years, compounded the struggles of a population already facing displacement due to conflict and insecurity. Thousands of people, already vulnerable, have been forced into overcrowded temporary shelters, lacking access to food, clean water, and shelter. #hammidbakare #OpeningMonologue #DiasporaNews #fyp #tiktoknewsupdate #UN #Borno #floodvictims

The escalating prevalence of flood-related incidents in South Africa has led to a concerning upsurge in fatal drownings. Geographic diversity, periodic heavy rainfall, and inadequate infrastructure significantly contribute to this trend. Urbanization, population growth, and climate change further exacerbate community vulnerability to flooding events. Prioritizing preventive measures and safety consciousness can help reduce fatal drownings. [Link to article: More than 1,000 people displaced in deadly floods in Eastern Cape]

Uganda has increasingly experienced a series of extreme weather events leading to eminent disasters, including floods, landslides, fires, accidents, heavy storms, and hailstorms in addition to epidemics and sudden refugee influxes. These disasters had a significant impact on the population and have claimed lives and destroyed livelihoods as well as family, community, and public infrastructure. In the same vain local humanitarian frontline actors especially Local Governments remain challenged due to inadequate capacity to respond to disasters and other emergencies. While progress has been made in terms of national and international policy commitments, the practice leaves a lot to be desired. The national policy dialogue focused on influencing policy shifts and call for the fulfilment of commitments in different national and international to enhance the capacity of local governments to effectively respond to disasters. As a result we ask legislators to push the pending Disaster Risk Management Bill forward as well as operationalize the Contingencies’ Fund. #GrandBargain #DisasterResponse #EmpoweringLHAs
