NEW: North Carolina must pay big for its decision to defend an unconstitutional Ag-Gag/Anti-Sunshine law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The state agreed to pay a public interest coalition represented by FarmSTAND that successfully struck down the law $884,987 in attorneys’ fees. The law allowed employers and property owners to sue undercover investigators seeking to expose unethical or illegal activities in the workplace, including to prosecutors, regulators, and legislators. Although similar to “Ag-Gag” laws challenged around the country, the state’s law extends beyond animal agriculture facilities and penalizes undercover investigations in settings like daycare centers and nursing homes. We've been proud to represent plaintiff groups including Government Accountability Project, Center for Food Safety, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Farm Sanctuary, ASPCA, and Food & Water Watch in this fight. • FarmSTAND-branded graphic with an aerial factory farm image and colorful streams of patterns in the background, reading "Defend Big Ag's interests to the detriment of the health, safety, and civil liberties of your citizens, and you'll be choosing to do so at the taxpayers' significant expense", attributed to the plaintiff groups' joint statement on the North Carolina Ag-Gag attorneys' fees settlement.
