“Inspiring Students to Inspire the World” - Whole School Lead Strategist and Head of Examinations at School Beyond Limitations, Educational Leadership Consultant
A group of School Beyond Limitations Alumni recently arranged an online meeting with me, whilst not an unusual occurrence at SBL it gave me real cause to reflect and ask - why does this happen so regularly at our school? My initial ‘philosophical’ thought is that these are a reflection of several factors that contribute to a strong sense of community and engagement. But as a deeply caring leader that is intrinsically aligned with our philosophy, my sense is that the reasons are far more visceral and emotional. Undeniably there is a very strong sense of belonging at SBL. We foster a strong sense of community and all feel deeply connected to each other. This is due to positive experiences that our Alumni experience at our school, the supportive relationships with everyone, and a deep sense of shared identity and mission. We also provide a nurturing learning environment so our students form long lasting bonds with each other and with us. I did not ask this question directly, but it must be a factor in creating a desire to stay connected, even after they have moved to ‘greener pastures’. Another factor may be that our students are always, in many different ways, in contact with us - in other words, we stay connected with each other in many ways after they leave SBL. Perhaps it is also the fact that they feel that SBL had a significant impact on their personal and academic growth. Therefore they are more likely to remain involved and in contact with people that matter to them. Another factor is that our facilitators not only inspire our students daily, but continue to inspire our Alumni to stay in touch with each other, with us and the SBL community. We actively promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity and create an environment where every student feels valued and accepted. This definitely fosters stronger relationships that endure and it is remarkable how deeply supportive they are of each other too.Certainly, all of our students share our values and our mission. These values still resonate with our Alumni and they have a sense of loyalty, thus continuing to support SBL long after they have left. Suffice to say that I did not question why our Alumni wanted to meet and without thinking too deeply - I simply just thoroughly enjoyed seeing them, loved their conversation and loved seeing them and I hope that they felt the same way…and I think that says it all!

🎓 Why Supporting Your Alma Mater Matters 📚 As alumni, we each have a stake in the continued success of the institutions that shaped us. Supporting your alma mater isn’t just a tradition—it’s a way to ensure that future students have access to the same opportunities we did, or better. While we were students, there were (and are today!) alumni supporting Franklin. In private liberal arts education, advancement plays a key role in maintaining the quality of academic programs, student life, and financial aid. With rising costs and shrinking public funding, alumni contributions help sustain what makes these institutions distinctive: small classes, close faculty engagement, and a broad-based education. At Franklin University Switzerland, there's even more: Academic Travel and diversity in our student body. We know first hand how the relationships forged with professors and fellow students from all corners of the globe have given our education a distinct advantage. Giving back isn’t just about looking back—it’s a way to ensure your alma mater remains a place where new ideas, diverse perspectives, and meaningful experiences thrive. Please contact me if you'd like to discuss supporting Franklin. #AlumniSupport #LiberalArts #HigherEd #Advancement #ImpactfulGiving

15 years ago I was wandering around the University of Chicago campus as a part of Teach For America’s summer institute preparing to become a teacher. I carpooled to Kansas City a few weeks later and began my career in education. Here’s what I learned that summer that still resonates with me now: 1) There’s always a deep knowing when you’re leaning into your purpose. I didn’t have a job, I didn’t know all the details, but I knew I was making the right step forward into my future. 2) Your community forms around your best intentions. I am still friends with the amazing people I met on campus that summer. Some of them still live in Kansas City. A few have become more like family then friends. 3) Nothing in this life is wasted if you believe it all works for your good. There are a million things I would have done better and that would have created a million more things to improve. Each step since then has led me to this place. I’ve circled back to find that when educators partner with parents, student success is accelerated. Where energy is channeled and outcomes explode into innovation, success knows no limit. Now is such a wonderful time to reflect and create a plan for the 2024/2025 school year where parents are partners and students excel. Crazy to think I wrote a book about this in 2019. The very next year I became a parent. It’s like I knew all along that my journey as an educator was bigger than just me. This work has been a part of my legacy. This city a part of our story… #kcmom #parentchampion #educator #thejourneycontinues #lifelearner #parentpartner

Grateful to present at CPED alongside over 400 university disruptive leaders from over 100 different universities willing to accept the status quo. As I reflect on nuggets of wisdom to bring back to Metropolitan State University of Denver this resonated with me: Building inclusive programs that reflect the essence of DEI for students of color and first-generation students at predominantly white institutions involves several key strategies:1. Engagement and Input: Involve students in the planning process to understand their needs and experiences. Conduct surveys and focus groups to gather insights.2. Culturally Relevant Curriculum: Develop curricula that reflect diverse perspectives and histories. This helps all students feel represented and valued.3. Mentorship Programs: Establish mentorship initiatives pairing students of color and first-generation students with faculty, staff, and peers who can provide guidance and support.4. Support Services: Create dedicated resources such as academic advising, counseling, and workshops focused on the unique challenges faced by these students.5. Community Building; Foster a sense of belonging through student organizations, cultural events, and networking opportunities that celebrate diversity.6. Training for Faculty and Staff: Provide professional development on cultural competency and inclusive teaching practices to ensure an understanding of the challenges faced by these groups.7. Financial Support: Increase access to scholarships, grants, and financial literacy programs specifically targeting these student populations.8. Retention Strategies: Implement programs aimed at supporting students through their academic journeys, such as study groups and peer support networks.By prioritizing these strategies, institutions can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that empowers all students to succeed. Tune in to "Let's Hear It," a podcast about social change communications, to hear host Eric Brown and College Futures Foundation President & CEO Eloy Ortiz Oakley discuss the challenges of elitism in higher education and the role philanthropy can play in ensuring a more equitable postsecondary system. https://buff.ly/4ga0S0d "The way we are approaching it at College Futures is understanding our role and where we can have impact. And where we think we can have impact is how we think about changing the narrative about what postsecondary education should be all about. How we change the perception about value. For example, we recently published a report called Golden Opportunities, which measure the return on investment on all 292 Title IV eligible institutions in California. It shows...community colleges and regional four years like the California State University campuses do a great job in returning on investment for learners and their families," says Eloy Ortiz Oakley. "Highlighting leaders doing the heavy lift on the ground, moving the needle in terms of change in perspective at their campus. Highlighting not only attaining a degree or credential but ensuring that degree and credential connects to economic mobility. That it actually lifts those learners. That we're doing what we need to connect learners to good-paying jobs." Listen to the full conversation on Let's Hear It:

It’s here! If you want to know what makes Hunter College so special, look no further than Stephen Lassonde’s new book, "Helping Your Students Write Personal Statements: Framing the Narrative for Fellowships and Other Opportunities." In the slim volume, the director of Hunter’s Office of Prestigious Scholarships & Fellowships bottles his “special sauce” on student marketing for college advisers. Congrats to Stephen Lassonde, who has championed a generation of Hunter College students for top fellowships, with remarkable results -- to which I would add our wonderful recipients of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans! Check out this great review in Inside Higher Ed: "A growing range of broader access institutions have begun to compete for highly competitive national merit-based scholarships and fellowships, and offer similar levels of support as the elites. Among the pioneers is The City University of New York's Hunter College, which, since 2016, has been awarded 5 Schwarzman scholarships, 2 Rhodes, 2 Marshall, 5 Luce, 2 Beinecke, and a Gates Cambridge scholarship." https://lnkd.in/eqUZhfq5
