🎓 A snapshot of my PhD journey 🔍 I often get asked about my PhD topic. If you're curious, here is a link to a presentation I gave last year as part of a thesis-in-three competition at the University of Limerick Kemmy Business School University of Limerick The task: explain your PhD project using 3 slides in 3 minutes 🤯 The result: https://lnkd.in/eRjB6Z5X This video provides a broad overview of my research, but I will be sharing more detailed findings VERY soon 👀😁

His research focused on studying different weir geometric combinations using the FLOW-3D hydrodynamic model. It was a rewarding experience guiding him through this innovative project and contributing to his academic and research development. https://lnkd.in/eFwwdcpN

Finally, my master's thesis "Solidarity between Obligation and Voluntariness" is finished! My main learnings? There are multiple understandings of solidarity and even though there can be an obligation to act in solidarity within groups, there is always a need for at least some voluntariness. Next stop: PhD!

"Where do you see yourself in five years?", Prof. Max von Delius (Ulm University) asked Richard Whitfield, postdoc at D-MATL, as a mock interview question. Such interactive exercises, discussions, and feedback rounds were at the core of today's "How to Start Your Own Lab" workshop. ETH Zurich Competence Center for Materials and Processes (MaP) organised it in collaboration with NaturalScience.Careers. Thirteen postdocs from MaP research groups attended. Besides the faculty interview, the workshop touched on topics such as "How to secure funding", "How to manage your projects", or "How to select your co-workers". #MaP #MaterialsandProcesses #postdocs #faculty Nethmi De Alwis Carla Fernandez Rico Se-Hyeong Jung Phil Preikschas Richard Whitfield Pius M. Wonderful video summary of the Floating Future Research Project kickoff! During this 5 year project the 44 project stakeholders will explore the upscaling of floating constructions, not only from the technical side, but also including social, economic and ecological aspects. I am very happy to be part of this exciting journey! Also make sure you check out the key lessons from the kickoff day, brilliantly summarised by Lasse Bech Knudsen https://lnkd.in/dTX67-J8
Check out the impression video of the Floating Future Research Project kickoff last month. In next 5 years we will be working with 10 PhD students and 40 partners on developing unique in the world scientific knowledge and achieving societal impact on upscaling floating structures in interdisciplinary casestudies. Exciting! https://lnkd.in/eqc--zKw

Allow me a moment to brag about my team. On Saturday, two of my Kean University undergraduate researchers, Alyssa Moffitt and Renato Mendez, gave a talk at the 69th meeting of the NEW JERSEY ACADEMY OF SCIENCE (NJAS). They presented to a room of about 25 people that included graduate students and faculty members from other universities. Talk about intimidating, particularly given it was their first talk and they were the only undergraduates presenting during their session. What I watched was incredible. Their slides were clear and engaging. Their presentation style was polished, accessible, and entertaining. And they both demonstrated composure under pressure in a way that I seldom see even at large national conferences. Last, but definitely not least, their science is pretty darn cool. Check out the video of their presentation below, and be on the lookout for an upcoming publication of their work. #undergraduateresearch #spottedlanternfly #cougarsclimbhigher #urbanresearch Reenat M., Sue Porterfield, EdD, David Birdsell, Lamont Repollet, Ed.D
