https://lnkd.in/eguGjZxv Today our Friday Tale is written by one of our advocates. Its an awful story of hopelessness for a traumatised mother in Scotland with no support and has been left stranded and afraid. We believe strongly that recovery happens but there must be space for that recovery to grow, there has to be some hope. We find more and more that many of the children taken into care have disabilities, are neurodivergent and often have perplexing conditions but their parents and carers are seen not as an agent to support their child but treated with suspicion and oppressed. The parents own difficulties are seen as "risk factors as opposed to "carers with unmet needs". We need to open up these discussions about how do we intervene in families lives where there are conditions that ask us to be more curious, more understanding and offer more support at the right time to the right people. #trauma #disability #advocacy #mothers #parents #grief

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at our collaboration with Illinois Action for Children (IAFC). IAFC partnered with ChiByDesign to employ a co-design approach to strengthen the connection between incarcerated parents and their children. Here you see Justin (facilitator), lived experts and other stakeholders working together to create their prototype centered around the concept for guaranteed resources for children and caregivers. Co-designers chose to address the economic barriers families face after the incarceration of a parent. They determined that a policy should provide guaranteed financial resources to families impacted by incarceration and the caregivers responsible for the children without restriction. #antiracism #chibydesign #codesign #equality #equity #traumaresponsivedesign

I like the idea of collaboration and benefit-finding through allyship and not only from People Affected By Sickle Cell but every partnership that could be of benefit to the #SickleCellCause. This is important because sickle cell disease is complex and the effects are multifaceted; therefore a multilayered and dynamic approach is needed to tackle the issues associated with it. Modelling other advocacy approaches similar to sickle cell in some way; whether that is in terms of manifestations, demographics, numbers etc would be a great way to move the agenda of sickle cell forward albeit with modification to the sickle cell need. Nothing of use should be left behind in this fight against sickle cell. With numbers set to rise; mitigation, preparedness and empowerment is the only way to go and it can’t be done without unity within the main sickle cell community. Agree? ⬇️

Advocate at High Court of Kerala focused on Bail, Writ, Criminal and Civil matters | Public_speaker | Teacher | Engineer| Trying to ensure justice is accessible to all. In pursuit to enhance my experience of existence
Misuse of POCSO is becoming a nightmare to Justice....... Recently in the netflix series "Mamla legal hai", theres a scene where lawyer threaten to impose pocso if girls parents didn't agree to solemnize child marriage. In essence, criminal trials under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of 2012 are tailored to address sexual offenses against minors, emphasizing their protection and welfare. While POCSO trials incorporate closed-court hearings and child-friendly communication techniques, recent scrutiny highlights potential unintended consequences, such as penalizing innocent adolescent relationships. Hon'ble Chief Justice of India Dr. D. Y. Chandrachud's recent call to re-evaluate the age of consent under the POCSO Act underscores the complexity of cases involving consenting adolescents. This highlights the need to balance protective measures with acknowledging the nuances of human relationships, especially during adolescence. There are a lot of instances where innocent teenage romance in schools is punished with pocso as a form of vengeance and its quite disheartening. Moreover, fostering a societal ethos that prioritizes the well-being of children through educational initiatives, community engagement, and awareness campaigns is essential to combat sexual offenses comprehensively.

📚✨ Dive into a compelling read with "Invisible Mothers: Unseen Yet Hypervisible after Incarceration" by Janet Garcia-Hallet. Armed with critical insight, this book uncovers the paradox of visibility: mothers of color are rendered invisible by societal institutions, yet hyper-visible when penalized for navigating their marginalization. Garcia-Hallet's work sheds light on their struggles and resilience, showcasing how these mothers reclaim their narratives and redefine motherhood. 📖🌟 Don't miss out on this insightful gem! Today, we're sharing Deafblind Australia’s Story: “Our vision is a world where every deafblind person has access to the support and resources, they need to live a full and independent life. In this world, individuals with deafblindness can communicate, navigate, and thrive without barriers. However, the recent funding cuts have significantly reduced our ability to provide important supports and advocacy for the deafblind community. These cuts leave us struggling to maintain our programs and support our members effectively. To overcome this barrier, we need the government to return and increase funding for Disability Representative Organisations like Deafblind Australia. We urge our supporters, services, families, and community to write to their local MPs, share our message on social media, and sign our petition demanding fair funding. Together, we can ensure that the voices of the deafblind community are heard, and their needs are met”. Without adequate funding, we risk leaving our most vulnerable members behind. #supportdeafblind #DisabilityRights #advocacy #NDISAustralia #auspol #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #disabilitysupport #inclusionmatters #AccessForAll

Did you miss last Saturday’s event? If you did, you missed as #SOuL was graced with two very passionate and experienced advocates for over 2 hours sharing their stories but also strategies of what worked, what’s working and what could be the way forward. Key phrases and words that stood out for us was: 🩸When discussing or advocating for #SickleCell or #Disability - ✅ Focus on “the Can Dos not Can’t Dos - John McDonald ✅Resilience is the ability to fight while running - Biba TINGA Key words included - #Unity #Collaboration #Voice #Power #Modelling #Benifit Finding #Disability #Language Some of the context they were used included the acknowledgment of - ✔️ Sickle Cell as a disability yet the need for strength to survive and even thrive with sickle cell often makes it difficult for People Living With Sickle Cell (nicknamed Warriors) to identify as People Living With A Disability. Also, the negative conotation often associated with disability including the additional burden it tends to imply further makes “Warriors” shun the term. Hence, language and how it is used especially to talk about disability in society or even when advocating for oneself or others was also discussed. ✔️The wins but also the opportunities being lost because of disunity within the #SickleCellSpace. It was suggested the way forward was not only to #Unite but also #Collaborate within and without the sickle cell space so that we talk with one voice but also find and use every opportunity available to get our voice heard but also ensure the main aim of improving the lives of People Living With Sickle Cell everywhere is realised. ☑️ The power we have in the #SickleCellCommunity. When we add the numbers of every person affected by sickle cell even without future projections, we form a very large piece of the world. When use well, we have the power to influence policies but also ensure the right policies are created to enable not only survival of a Person With Sickle but also ensuring they have full and meaningful lives accessing everything like every one else. In this number lies our #Voice and #Power. Watch out for the little video takeaways to be out soon and the training on #Resilence which had to be moved forward. Comment below, if you agree (or not) on the point raised and your interest on the #ResilenceTraining.

Historically, individuals who have experienced incarceration often face barriers to accessing basic human rights, with educational equity being a prominent concern. In response to this challenge, the University of San Diego established the Torero Urban Scholars program with the goal of narrowing this gap. The Torero Urban Scholars program is designed to create better access, advocacy, and support for University of San Diego students who have similar experiences with incarceration.
