Attention all crew! Could you spot a fake job offer? Scammers are on the prowl, and with fake job postings increasing, it is essential to stay alert and safeguard your personal information❗️ Here at Superyacht References, we have developed tips to help you identify red flags and protect yourself 🙌 Red Flags to Watch Out For: 🚩Unprofessional Communication: Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or vague job descriptions. 🚩Too Good to Be True: Unrealistic salaries and perks. 🚩Urgency: Pressure to make quick decisions or provide personal information immediately. 🚩Suspicious Email Addresses: Check if the email domain matches the company's website. 🚩Upfront Fees: Job postings asking for job placement services or "processing fees." How to Stay Safe: 🛟Research: Find the company online and verify its legitimacy through official channels. 🛟Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to request more details about the job, vessel, and hiring process. 🛟Withhold Personal Info: Never share documents containing personal information until you know the job is legitimate. 🛟Seek Advice: Ask fellow crew members or trusted industry professionals for advice if in doubt. Remember, it's better to miss an opportunity than to fall victim to a scam. If you suspect a job post might be a scam, trust your instincts and report it. I help companies navigate the overwhelming time commitment necessary to hire the best people so you can concentrate on you regular job and have peace of mind making the final hiring decision.
Would you put a bag of dog poop at the curb of your own home……and what does that have to do with recruiting top performers? Walking in my neighborhood last week I came across this sign in front of a neighbor’s home. My neighbor went dumpster diving to retrieve a bag of dog poop from their own trash can. They then placed it on their own sidewalk with a sign, aiming to shame the culprit who left it in their trash can. Sure, it's frustrating when someone uses your trash can for their dog's waste. But is dumpster diving and public shaming really the smart move? Especially when you put it on the curb of your own home? My father always says you may be right but are you sure you’re wise? Now, let’s talk hiring. I had a client who offered a candidate a job with a verbally agreed unusual term. Legal investigated, found it unconventional, and changed the official offer without telling anyone before sending the official offer letter. The candidate was surprised and pushed back, leading to two weeks of negotiations. Despite eventually reverting to the original term in the formal offer letter, the candidate declined. Was the company right to investigate? Probably. Was it wise to change the offer after a verbal agreement? Absolutely not. Just like the homeowner was right to be upset, but unwise to handle it by public shaming….and cluttering their own yard in the process This job market is tricky. It's more of an employer's market, but that doesn't mean you can treat candidates poorly. Your reputation is on the line. Every decision, every negotiation, every offer matters. Be wise. Be respectful. And win the right talent.

CREW RECRUITMENT: Recently as a personal favour, I helped an owner with an urgent "Stew/Deckhand" position. While I received impressive CV's, with great experience, qualifications, and references........ the reality was that the majority of candidates who went on for an interview or day trial were shockingly bad. Some couldn't even tie a knot, understand basic yachting terms, welcome guests properly, prepare basic canapés, or even make a coffee correctly. This raises the question, is this why crew retention is so bad, or do we need to question the training and qualifications process? It's worth noting that many of these candidates demanded upwards of 5k, some even 7k a month ++! What are your thoughts on this issue? #yachting #crewlife #recruitment #training #qualifications
