34 years is an amazing legacy. The leadership the US has provided sine 1990 has been an invaluable influence to disability rights in countries around the world. But 34 later and what's changed in architectural, interior design, landscaping, urban planning, and industrial design, etc. education to ensure disability inclusion for disabled people and veterans is not only fully aligned with the ADA minimums but teaching beyond minimums, aiming for innovation and excellence? Where are the current and future changes to licensing and manditory post secondary education? Fully and usable disability inclusion won't be successful until building code legislation, education, policy, etc. are aligned to finally ensure accessibility is a fundamental principle to successful, sustainable design. This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, housing, and access to various government programs and services. Since its enactment, July has been designated as Disability Pride Month—a time to honor the many unique talents and skills of people living with disabilities. Disability, whether visible or invisible, can happen at any point in a person's lifetime. Each individual’s experience with disability is unique, underscoring the importance of recognizing and celebrating this diversity. Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to expand our consciousness of those living with disabilities and to reflect upon their contributions. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law July 26, 1990. This month, we celebrate the impact of this crucial human rights law on disabled people’s lives, and recognize the incredible contributions disabled folks make to our society every day. As we commemorate Disability Pride Month, and always: Disabled people belong. In women’s rights conversations. In business. In positions of leadership. In our movies, our messages, our songs, our shows, our art, our movements. But that’s not exactly right, is it? Disabled people belong in THEIR conversations. THEIR businesses, movies, messages, songs, shows, movements. Life, respect, and dignity belong to all of us. In all the places decisions are being made. In all the places lives are being lived. Whatever accommodations and care disabled folks need, they deserve. Just like all of us. Disabled people deserve their lives, their autonomy, and our unwavering support and respect as they continue to shape and enrich the world. #DisabilityPride #DisabilityPrideMonth
