'If the measure of a society’s humanity is how it treats its most vulnerable...we are falling far short.' There's nothing new in the Darzi report today - and I hate the word 'vulnerable' - but at least this (briefly) nods to healthcare failures/barriers for people with learning disabilities: - a third of rooms (6,600+) in mental health/learning disability sites lack ensuite facilities - people with a learning disability twice as likely to die from preventable causes and four times as likely to die from treatable causes - not enough people registered with GPs or getting annual health checks (those two facts are of course linked) - 2,000+ people locked up in inappropriate inpatient care Various groups, mostly the big name usual suspects, were involved in the expert reference group and the call for evidence, but there's seemingly little direct input from people themselves, especially from community based organisations. Partly explained by the fact this is a rapid review, but it's the same huge and typical gap in research and review exercises - and something Prof Chris Hatton looks at next issue of Community Living Magazine (out early October). #nhs #healthcare #healthinequality #learningdisability #autism #labour #ukgovernment https://lnkd.in/eFkpUZV3

As a bereaved parent of a medically complex child, I continue to see families walk this path of navigating systems and advocating. There also begins to be a slow increase in health research on medical complexity and supporting caregivers. I see organizations like Children's Healthcare Canada and Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence advance the work of supportive policies. We have CIHI data that tells the story of the scope of this population across the provinces. Now is the time to begin to streamline connection for this community of families. So nobody misses out on policy advancements, opportunities to participate or partner in research. So families can feel connected. So families can access new research with greater ease. This has been on my mind and the minds of many of my friends and colleagues. So the question remains, how do we begin to develop this story? How do we democratize important information? How do we streamline how to get involved? This needs to happen and I’d love to give this the time and innovation it deserves.
