Here we go again, another mental health awareness week. Rather than creating social media fodder, how about having a work culture that embeds a staff wellbeing strategy from start to finish of a career? Are you really taking the health of your staff seriously or just doing something to promote the slogan 'It's okay to be not okay'? Do you take the time to understand your team? Do you understand their aspirations and support this? Do you support them in growing and upskilling? Do you provide genuine flexible working? Do you provide tangible benefits? Do you support building social connections and team cohesion? Do senior staff and managers model and support healthy boundaries? Mental health isn't all yoga; that's nice, but if your work culture isn't healthy, neither is your workforce. An awareness week is an opportunity to go beyond what you already do and highlight your good practices. Not to create social media fodder of 'Aren't we great?' As leaders in #Medtech, it's our responsibility to create an environment where mental well-being comes first and to build a culture where everyone feels valued, supported and empowered to ask for help. A few suggestions: 1️⃣ Be vulnerable and open with your team, and let them feel it's okay to talk about their struggles. 2️⃣ Lead with love and share your own experiences to normalize seeking help. 3️⃣ Have support available to everyone such as counseling, wellness programs, and mental health days. 4️⃣ Provide mental health training for managers and employees to equip them with the skills to recognize signs of distress and provide appropriate support. 5️⃣ Promote Work-Life Balance by encouraging breaks, flexible working hours, and the importance of unplugging after work hours. I’m feeling INSPIRED and EMPOWERED TO LEAD after attending Modern Health’s Ellevate Well-Being conference. Some of my key takeaways relate to the role of the Manager in employee Well-Being: 1 - A leader must develop the ability to ask for and give feedback. Follow the cardinal rule: CLEAR is KIND! 2 - Walk the talk! Psychological safety is key to prevent burnout. A leader exhibiting vulnerability by sharing their own life examples combats stigma and empowers their team members to be open and transparent when they are struggling. 3 - A company can have a lot of benefits associated with Wellbeing, but they go to waste if employees cannot make the time to enjoy them. Training managers to help their teams distribute workload and prioritize tasks to make space for moments of wellbeing is essential. Reflecting on the type of leader I strive to be, reminded me of a book I read a couple of years ago: “The Promises of Giants” by John Amaechi. He explains that to become true leaders, we must promise to know ourselves deeply, be vulnerable, monitor our biases vigilantly, nurture everyone’s potential so they can become their best self, be consistently present for the people we interact with, drive our workplace culture and foster belonging to create a true team. Giants understand that success isn’t an individual pursuit. As giants, we must use our power to empower and elevate others. Sucess occurs in an environment where everyone is given the chance to thrive.
