Commercial and industrial building owners take note, pay attention to your peak demand charge as much or more than your energy charges. Oftentimes the decision to turn on a device like an air conditioner is a more expensive decision than the decision to run it all day.

A few weeks back I posted about energy consumption from my heat pump and how it compared to previous years with a gas boiler: https://lnkd.in/eM2NMS7z At this half way point in the heating season I’ve now estimated my total energy consumption for the year and the total costs – see charts below. The hatched segments show the estimates. Two main takeaways: 1. Energy consumption is significantly lower with the heat pump. This is no real surprise considering its running at around 400% efficiency compared to the gas boiler at less than 100% efficiency. 2. The total cost for the year is well within the range of previous years, certainly no higher, and I suspect is lower, all other factors being equal. The main variables influencing consumption included the outside temperature (2020-2021 was the coldest), number of people at home (2020-2021 was the highest, while this year and last were the lowest), and how warm we kept the house (2022-2023 was the coldest because of the high energy costs). The three previous years with a gas boiler therefore provide a good set of reference points, spanning high and low consumption. Really importantly, while our energy consumption this year is the lowest, our house has been the warmest ever. This is because we’re running the heating 24/7 and keeping the house around 17.5 at night and 18.5C during the day. Add a comment if you’d like to know more. Heat pumps really are marvellous energy saving, low carbon machines. #heatpumps #energyefficiency #renewableenergy
