“Nunavut and its residents will now be able to make decisions about how public lands, freshwater, and non-renewable resources are used in the territory, AND REAP THE BENEFITS OF RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT. Devolution will create Northern-led jobs, opportunities, investments, and more prosperity for Nunavut and its people, for generations to come.” “Nunavut” in the Inukitut language is “our land.” CAPITAL LETTERS are my choice. Well done to the Feds.

Good afternoon and happy Chinese New Year! Our Asia Desk takes a deep dive into the upcoming 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election. In this SEIC Quicktakes, we provide a preview of the 14 February polls, giving readers a primer on the candidates, key issues and the personas that the candidates used. Assessing the current political climate in Indonesia, we see that the Prabowo-Gibran ticket will win the election in the first round. With a strong implicit backing of Jokowi, Prabowo's rehabilitated image and a strong brand awareness, we see Prabowo's lead to be insurmountable. == This student-run publication features the hard work of the SEIC Research team. The names of the contributors are at the back of the document. We hope to continue to refine our publications and improve our writing, research, and analysis as the weeks go by. We are always on the lookout for more partnerships and students interested in what we do. If you wish to contact us, please drop us an e-mail at seic@sa.smu.edu.sg or contact our Head of Research, Moses Lim, or President, Zheng Yi Ng through Linkedin #Macro #politics #elections2024 #perlimu2024 #pilapres2024 #jokowi #gibran #prabowo #anies #muhaimin #teamamin #pkb #nasdem #pdip #ganjar #mahfud

On April 14, the Haida Nation entered into the Gaayhllxid • Gíihlagalgang "Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement, a historic agreement with the province of British-Columbia which formally recognizes Haida Aboriginal title throughout Haida Gwaii. « This is the first time in Canadian history that the colonial government has recognized Indigenous Title across an entire terrestrial territory, and it’s the first time this kind of recognition has occurred outside of the courts. » This Agreement, which is premised on Haida legal principles of respect (Yahguudang/Yagudáng), interconnectedness with the land (Gina ‘waadluxan gud ad kwaagid/Gin ‘wáadluwaan gud ahl kwáagiidang), reciprocity (Isda ad dii gii isda/Ísda isgyaan díi ga ísdii) and collective responsibility to maintain balance (Giid tlljuus/Gin ‘wáadluwaan dámaan tl’ kínggang) sets a powerful precedent for advancing indigenous rights and self-determination. Looking forward to seeing how this agreement will pave the way in advancing meaningful reconciliation for the Haida Nation and for all First Nations throughout the country. #IndigenousRights #HaidaTitleLandsAgreement #IndigenousLaw

17 years ago today, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. This important Declaration was drafted in partnership with the world’s Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations Australians. Today, UNDRIP remains the strongest instrument and guiding framework for the rights of Indigenous Peoples – which Australia, and all States, use to protect and promote the rights of Indigenous Peoples globally. Australia is committed to the implementation of the Declaration and to delivering real and lasting progress for Indigenous Peoples and their communities in Australia and across the globe. On days like today, it is important we reflect on the improvements we have made protecting the rights for Indigenous Peoples across the world, and to recognise work to be done to ensure the Declaration is realised.
