Practical chemistry activities are an essential part of an engaging, inspiring and relevant chemistry education. However, in our Science Teacher Survey 2023, teachers told us that they faced many barriers to running practical chemistry activities. Some of these were: ⏳ Insufficient time for practical work to be taught alongside theory (60%) 💸 Cost of consumables and chemicals (37%) and a lack of equipment (35%) 👩🔬 Understaffing of science technicians (27%) We are committed to finding solutions to science teachers' biggest concerns and challenges and have developed recommendations to ensure practical activities remain a core part of the chemistry discipline through our policy work. Watch this space to find out what these are later this month. Also, share your opinions with us on this topic by joining our upcoming discussion with current teachers & technicians, as we address the biggest barriers science teachers are facing later this month. https://lnkd.in/e_nxPyVA

Are you a highschooler interested in environmental research? Welcome to A Sustainable Future (ASF), a nonprofit initiative that focuses on reducing paper consumption within the academic setting. A Sustainable Future was founded on the basis of protecting our planet--starting with our schools. Here at ASF, we provide students with the resources to educate themselves and others on sustainable consumption. · · ────────────── · · ASF's Paper Consumption Program leverages a student-centered approach to facilitate the educational, social, and personal growth of students as environmental advocates. Participants in ASF’s Paper Consumption Program should not only be introduced to academic research, but also the analysis of large-scale data through fundamental machine learning and statistical techniques, real-world presentation and public skills, and critical community outreach tactics to raise awareness on sustainable paper consumption. Upon completion of the program, students will have created a customized paper budgeting plan for their schools based on data they've collected through their school-based research, thereby helping their schools better gauge their paper consumption and take steps to mitigate extraneous usage. One study of sixth- to eighth-grade students engaging in a one-year, place-based curriculum concluded that “through direct interaction with landowners, students developed a better understanding of decision-making in farm and forest enterprises, and received insights into the global interconnectedness of agricultural markets. The students’ learning benefit during outdoor lessons was especially mediated through hands-on learning and active participation. In a self-evaluation learning assessment, 75% of the students reported having gained new knowledge about farms, forests and wildlife refuges, and 25% developed better communication skills towards adults.” Idaho schools and districts looking to expand or establish their outdoor educational offerings should consider reaching out to the University of Idaho - McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) for help. ____ SRC: Becker, C., Lauterbach, G., Spengler, S., Dettweiler, U., & Mess, F. The University of Wyoming’s Teacher-Researcher Knowledge Exchange (TRKE) program has launched its second year, connecting K-12 educators with researchers to bring Wyoming-specific science into classrooms. This fall, 31 participants gathered in Pinedale for a hands-on institute exploring water quality, climate data, and conservation efforts. "With their background at UW’s Science and Math Teaching Center, which has supported teachers for over 50 years, Inouye and colleague Clare Gunshenan devised the TRKE program to bring teachers and researchers together in person." The SMTC is housed within the University of Wyoming College of Education. The idea of 'Greening the Curriculum' across all grades is a critical step in connecting students to the world around them by nurturing a sense of care and understanding year after year, starting from their early years and on through their secondary education. Positive behaviors and attitudes need to be fostered from early ages, and so students can build their understanding of the impact of actions and their relationship to the environment as they grow.
