Climate change has led to increased pests, disease attacks, and unpredictable weather patterns. Few crops can survive such challenges, but Finger Millet can, this is why it is such an important crop. We are working with International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Busia County Government and other partners to increase income and nutrition throughout Busia County using Finger Millet quality seeds. #improvedseed #FingerMillet https://lnkd.in/eeMbbZvH

Striga hermonthica, commonly known as purple witchweed, or Striga, Kayongo, luyongo,,,, is a deceivingly beautiful root hemi-parasite. Though categorized as a weed, its more of a plant pathogen because its mode of action requires that there must be a conducive environment (high temperatures, low soil moisture, and low soil N and P), a virulent pathogen, and a susceptible viable host (though no total resistance has been attained so far). Successful disease occurrence requires that the three factors exist together in space and time. The conducive environment herein easily explains why we don't have Striga in highland regions. Just so you know. :-) Anyway, in the wake of climate change and a dire need for sustainable and conservatory agriculture to ensure food security (available, at all times, and nutritious ), among several other SDGs (1,2,3,8,13) the parasite by all means needs to be eradicated. In multistakeholder and partnership, Global Crop Trust has been working with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania through research institutions such as ICRISAT, KALRO, NaSSARI, and TARI to deliver resistant varieties for mitigating Striga damage. https://lnkd.in/d-uuRT_x

Derry & Raphoe news:𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 – 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘈 𝘮𝑒𝘴𝑠𝘢𝑔𝘦 𝘧𝑟𝘰𝑚 𝑡𝘩𝑒 𝐵𝘪𝑠𝘩𝑜𝘱𝑠’ 𝘈𝑝𝘱𝑒𝘢𝑙 𝑓𝘰𝑟 𝑊𝘰𝑟𝘭𝑑 𝐴𝘪𝑑 𝑎𝘯𝑑 𝐷𝘦𝑣𝘦𝑙𝘰𝑝𝘮𝑒𝘯𝑡 Every one of us has the power to bring change to farmers and communities around the world through the choices we make when we go shopping. The Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal is encouraging all our parishes and people to make that ‘Fairtrade Choice’. It’s easy to buy Fairtrade – most supermarkets across the island of Ireland stock a wide range of Fairtrade products, all bearing the Fairtrade mark. From tea, coffee, sugar and cocoa, to cut flowers, bananas, nuts, fruit and vegetables, chocolate, cotton and cold drinks – and even gold, there are so many easily accessible products that are certified Fairtrade, that we are literally spoilt for choice. Simply look for the distinctive Fairtrade mark on the things you are buying anyway, and swop to Fairtrade whenever you can. Making that Fairtrade choice is one simple way that we can support the farmers who are producing these products. Being part of the Fairtrade Foundation means that they not only get paid a fair price for their produce, but they also benefit from support and help with combatting the impact of climate change – support with adapting their crops and farming methods to protect themselves and their families. Fairtrade works with co-operatives, businesses and governments to make trade fairer, with a vision to see a world in which trade is based on fairness so that producers earn secure and sustainable livelihoods. During September there is a special focus on Fairtrade Fortnight with many supermarkets stocking extra Fairtrade ranges, so that the choice is even easier. Look out for the logo next time you are shopping and see what could be your new favourite. This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight takes place from Monday, 9th September, to Sunday, 22nd September 2024. Find out more through the Fairtrade websites for the UK and Ireland: www.fairtrade.org.uk and www.fairtrade.ie

Vegetable prices fluctuate as the harvest is based on time of the year and other environmental factors. Every time there is a huge variation people look at the government as if it can do something about it. This video discusses about a solution that does not require any government intervention.

How do we solve this? 🚜 Market access for smallholder farmers and rural cooperatives remains a big challenge in Rwanda, an Agri-Expert Clement TWAHIRWA mentioned obvious lack of the synergy between respective Ministries (Minagri ,MINALOC, MINICOM) which is very discouraging to end hunger and progress sustainable development in rural Rwanda. FAO reported a challenge of weak processing capacity and higher value-added products placed on the market. Decade ago the share of food crops processed remains a little bit above 6.5%. Whereas the total food produced in the country only 34% reaches the market. The reasons for unexploited processing capacity lies in lack of appropriate technologies, expertise, financing incentives and rural infrastructure. As documentary photographer i witnessed the tangible impact of key players in Eastern province districts Kayonza and Kirehe kudos to (@Cordaid Rwanda ,International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) applying 2 strategies 1. Increase agricultural productivity sustainably, 2. improve post-harvest processes and strengthen market linkages. Lack enough today, H.E Paul Kagame is always faithful to his people and responded in less than 72hours, now Ten Thousands of tones of rice got the market in Rusizi District. #Micro10X #VOXPOP We can't wait for the Seed War Episode on RBA/RTV https://lnkd.in/dWeW4jAq

A short clip of how frightening processed food can actually destroy a nation. I personally do not like the fact that the cost of convenient processed food available is cheaper than the cost of the real food, even to us in developed nation. Since we are fortunate that we have to choice to choose due to our earning power, it will be better choice to choose real food vs processed food. Or else in future, we will need to pay more in medical bills. This is the true meaning of the term 'Health is Wealth' https://lnkd.in/gJJwmhRz
