The ANRIN team recently onboarded CAN and JNI State Focal Persons on implementing Phase 2 of the CCSI-led support to the ANRiN project. The goal was to equip state focal persons to support the rollout of ANRiN’s Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) through Faith Leaders in their respective states. By strengthening their capacity, we're working towards improving their role in supporting nutrition outcomes for vulnerable populations. On July 18, 2024, I participated in an online #webinar titled "Nutrition Now: The Economic and Human Capital Benefits of Reaching the WHA Global Nutrition Targets," organized by #Nutrition International. The event, moderated by @Leon Liu Looveren, featured various panelists. @Joel Spicer, President of Nutrition International, underscored the critical importance of achieving the six Global Nutrition Targets. These targets include reducing childhood stunting by 40%, decreasing anemia in women of reproductive age by 50%, lowering low birth weight by 30%, preventing an increase in childhood overweight, increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates to at least 50% in the first 6 months, and maintaining childhood wasting below 5%. He warned that failing to meet these targets by 2030 could lead to significant repercussions by 2050, such as one in three women being anemic and one in six children being stunted. @Dylan Walters, Project Director at Nutrition International's Health Economics Unit, highlighted the staggering economic burden of malnutrition, estimating it costs approximately USD 761 billion annually, equivalent to 1% of global income. He emphasized the potential economic benefits of scaling up nutrition interventions to meet these targets, citing examples like potentially generating USD 2.3 billion annually if stunting targets are achieved in Nigeria by 2025. #Nutrition International also introduced the "Cost of Inaction Tool," designed to provide comprehensive information on nutrition and its economic implications. @Francesco Branca from #WHO emphasized the critical link between nutrition and public health, noting that addressing nutrition challenges is crucial for global safety. He pointed out that half of all deaths are related to nutrition issues. In his concluding remarks, President Joel Spicer reiterated the importance of the "Cost of Inaction Tool" as both a local and political instrument for developing evidence-based policies and driving significant progress in nutrition. He concluded with a call to action, stating, "For all people and the nutrition community, change is possible with focus; IT’S TIME TO END MALNUTRITION FOR GOOD." So totally agree with this manifesto - there is never going to be enough money in the NHS to support an increasingly sick and ageing population. Many of the chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and even dementia can be prevented by a holistic approach to nutrition, lifestyle and all the myriad of factors that affect our health and well-being both physical and mental. There is no joined up thinking about our health - the system is too fragmented. One example that occurred to me recently based on my own experience is the lack of NHS dentists mean many can’t afford to look after their oral health. Poor oral health and hygiene is linked to heart disease and there is increasing evidence linking it to brain health too. And then there’s social care and the lack of link up ….. If nutritional therapists were on the front line of public health and integrated into general practice alongside doctors the process of connecting the dots could begin. We are first and foremost health detectives looking at underlying causes of ill health and not just dealing with symptom management. #healthdetectives #clinicalnutrition #nutritionaltherapy #functionalmedicine
25 years of failed policy on prevention in healthcare.... BANT was founded in 1997 with a handful of members and the ambition to shape the future of personalised nutrition one person at a time. Fast-forward 25 years and BANT membership has swelled to over 3,300 members, composed of PSA-accredited Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners and BANT Registered Nutritionists®. Sadly the health of our nation has also seen a dramatic transformation during this time, and we have seen a unprecedented rise in chronic disease, much of which is related to poor diet and lifestyle habits. Simultaneously we have witnessed an explosion of ultra-processed food and drinks which now account for over 50% of the average Britain diet. The effects of these foods on health was made very clear in research published by the BMJ in April of this year, showing UPFDs to are directly associated with a higher risk of adverse health outcomes against 32 different health parameters spanning mortality, cancer, and mental, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and metabolic health outcomes. In 2022, The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP set out his plan for the NHS, based on 3 pillars: Prevention, Personalisation and Performance. As we prepare for a General Election, BANT asks are we any closer to achieving this? Victoria Atkins Wes Streeting MP In our BANT manifesto for health, we outline our plan for feeding our future and transforming health and nutrition in Britain. Read our 'Actions to achieve change': - Policy to support a healthier population. - Increase funding for prevention. - Include nutrition practitioners in the NHS. - Update national dietary guidelines. - Legislation on food labelling. - Action against the drivers of obesity. The Programs of the Universal Salt Iodization Advocacy are highly impactful and cost-effective in combating Iodine Deficiency, with a Benefit-to-Cost ratio estimated at $30 : 1. Thus, public investments on the advocacy programs is very worthy.
Beyond its impact on children's learning, #iodinedeficiency imposes significant healthcare expenses, as seen in studies from #Iran and #Germany. Globally, the benefits of #saltiodization programs have been profound, preventing millions of clinical cases and translating into significant economic gains, estimated at nearly $33 billion. The global burden of malnutrition at a glance, The world has made some progress towards achieving global nutrition targets. However, this progress is far too slow and malnutrition persists at high levels. It's a reminder that our collective efforts must intensify to create a healthier, well-nourished global population. #GlobalNutrition #EndMalnutrition
