Happy World Breastfeeding Week! As we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7), we recognize the importance of supporting inclusive spaces for breastfeeding. Did you know "Inclusive spaces" refers to environments that are welcoming, accessible, and supportive of all individuals. In the context of breastfeeding, inclusive spaces mean: 1. Physical spaces that are comfortable and private for breastfeeding 2. Access to necessary amenities like lactation rooms, nursing areas, or clean facilities 3. Supportive policies and practices that accommodate breastfeeding employees or visitors 4. A culture that normalizes and respects breastfeeding, rather than stigmatizing it 5. Equal access to resources and information for all individuals. Inclusive spaces promote a sense of belonging, safety, and acceptance, allowing breastfeeding mothers to feel comfortable and confident in their surroundings. Today through August 7th is World Breastfeeding Week! This week became official in 1992, with the intention of increasing public awareness and support for breastfeeding. This year, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action has created a campaign called "Closing the Gap", which aims to increase access to breastfeeding support and reduce inequalities that exist in our society. A few key messages include: 1) Support for women to breastfeed anytime, anywhere, so that it is normalized 2) Effective maternity entitlements that do not force women to choose between their families and their work 3) Trained health professionals who can provide helpful, respectful breastfeeding support 4) An end to exploitative baby-milk promotions You can read more about the importance of this campaign here: worldbreastfeedingweek.org Sources: WHO, World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #NormalizeBreastfeeding
