Off Quality versus Quantity - Why Qualitative Research Matters! Staged by the Entrepreneurship in Minority Special Interest Group and the British Academy of Management African Track 11am – 1pm GMT 4 November 2024 ONLINE (MS Teams) We are delighted to extend an invitation to you for our upcoming online symposium, titled ‘Quality versus Quantity – Why Qualitative Research Matters!’ This workshop is jointly organised by the ISBE Entrepreneurship in Minority Special Interest Group and the British Academy of Management African Track. At the heart of this event is our commitment to promoting best practices in qualitative research. On our part, we recognise the long-standing debate about quantitative and qualitative research, and in particular, the relative merits and disadvantages of these two styles of inquiry. On the face of it, based on our philosophical leaning as non-positivists, we want to explore the extent to which there is a clear connection between each of the two traditions and their underlying differences, as generally perceived by the participants in the debate. 🌟 I’m thrilled to share my recent publications using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA): 📄 "Green human resource management in a family business setting: a fuzzy set approach" in Entrepreneurship & Regional Development - An International Journal. Co-authored with Pascal Paillé, Jorge Humberto Mejía-Morelos, Luis Cisneros Martinez, and Valeriano Sanchez-Famoso. 📊 We identified four distinct configurations of GHRM practices that enable family businesses to achieve economic performance while pursuing environmental objectives. 📄 "How does a subsequent entrepreneurship career choice develop? A set-theoretic analysis testing hope theory" in the Journal of Small Business Management. Co-authored with Etienne St-Jean, Maripier Tremblay, and Francois L'Écuyer, D.B.A.. 📊 This study underscores the central role of attitude and optimism in explaining entrepreneurial career persistence, transitioning from a novice to a serial entrepreneur, with grit playing a somewhat secondary role. ✨ These studies highlight the power of the QCA approach in revealing complex configurations leading to important entrepreneurial phenomena. Congratulations to Dr. Tim R. Holcomb Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Director of the John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship in the Miami University Farmer School of Business at Miami University. Dr. Holcomb and his co-authors received word that their paper, “Exploring the Effects of Institutional Logics on Entrepreneurial Opportunity Evaluations in Emerging Economies," has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Small Business Management, a leading peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes international research on small business management and entrepreneurship, including small business management, organization, strategy and finance. Using data gathered from 326 aspiring entrepreneurs in India, this paper extends theory on institutional logics by highlighting that logics act not only as a "lens" but also as a "mirror," helping entrepreneurs predict how certain stakeholders will interpret and react to their decisions and actions. The study also identifies critical boundary conditions of the decision context that make the effect of institutional logic more or less salient and highlight that financial stakes and support from close associates strengthen the relationship between the family logic and willingness to invest. The paper was co-authored with Dr. Rakesh Pati, Senior Lecturer in Management in the Department of Management at Deakin University (Melbourne), Dr. Niharika Garud, Associate Professor in Management in the Department of Management & Marketing, University of Melbourne, and Dr. Chris Sutter, Associate Professor of Management and the Fealy Family Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Carl H.
