### The Innovative Field of Quantum Biology Quantum biology, the study of quantum phenomena in biological systems, is unveiling new dimensions in the understanding of life processes. This emerging field investigates how quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, influence biological functions like photosynthesis, enzyme activity, and avian navigation. Recent research has shown that quantum coherence plays a crucial role in the efficiency of photosynthesis, allowing plants to transfer energy with near-perfect efficiency. Additionally, studies suggest that birds may use quantum entanglement to sense Earth's magnetic field for navigation. Quantum biology not only challenges traditional biological concepts but also opens avenues for revolutionary advancements in medicine and technology. #QuantumBiology #QuantumMechanics #BiologicalInnovation

The discoverer of the energy distribution formula for black body radiation, Wilhelm Wien was born on January 13, 1864. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1911 for his work on heat radiation. In 1896, Wilhelm Wien produced Wien’s formula which described the distribution of energy in radiation spectrum as a function of wavelength and temperature. It was based on an assumption that a hot body consists of a large number of oscillators emitting radiation of all possible frequencies and all in thermal equilibrium. Wien’s formula is well obeyed at short wavelengths but is wrong for longer values. Rayleigh produced a formula accurate at longer wavelengths but not at lower ones. New article out – Frederik Doktor Skødt Simonsen, Rijutha Jaganathan, Zeyuan Tang, Bjørk Hammer and Liv Hornekær. Title: Molecular Hydrogen Formation via Vibrational Excitation of Partially Superhydrogenated Pyrenes Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are abundant in the interstellar medium and act as catalytic surfaces in a crucial interplay between hot atomic gas and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Especially in the dissociation fronts of giant, star forming gas clouds, PAHs will undergo competing reactions from the interaction with hydrogen (H) atoms and UV radiation leading to hydrogenation, dehydrogenation or carbon fragmentation. This work reveals energetically favorable H2 formation pathways through vibrational excitation of partially superhydrogenated PAHs; and reveals the importance of edge termination which greatly influences the stability of these possible H2 factories in space. Researchers have made a groundbreaking advancement in understanding "supersolids," providing strong evidence that this exotic state of matter exhibits both solid and superfluid properties. Supersolids are unique in that they maintain a rigid structure while also flowing without resistance, akin to superfluids. Francesca Ferlaino from the University of Innsbruck likens this phenomenon to Schrödinger’s cat, which is simultaneously alive and dead, emphasizing the dual nature of supersolids as both rigid and liquid. This combination has made their existence challenging to demonstrate. The latest findings have significant implications for quantum matter research, particularly regarding its behavior under extreme conditions. Ferlaino noted that this research allows scientists to observe phenomena in the lab that typically occur only in extreme environments, such as the cores of neutron stars. These discoveries pave the way for studying the hydrodynamic properties of exotic quantum systems, including quantum crystals and neutron stars. #Supersolids #QuantumPhysics #ResearchBreakthrough #UniversityOfInnsbruck #NeutronStars #ExoticMatter

Today we're falling head first into the mind-bending chaos of quantum biology, piercing the veil between the microscopic world and the bizarre playground of quantum mechanics. Dr. Clarice Aiello of the newly founded Quantum Biology Institute, formerly of UCLA, guides us through the magnetic highways of nature, where cryptochromes and electron spins become the rogue navigators of life’s hidden machinery. The discussion is a madcap chase after how these quantum phenomena might drive not only the migration of birds but the very basis of human cells—bordering on sci-fi insanity, but with hard evidence in tow. By the end, it’s clear we’re standing on the edge of a revolution, where biology and quantum physics collide in a way that will reshape our understanding of life and its untapped potential—but only if we can accept the scale of the challenge. https://lnkd.in/g7wsYD7U
