Four out of five people across the UK believe homelessness is a serious problem and there is a strong sense that as a society we pay too little attention to it, our latest poll with Ipsos UK has found. 83% of adults across the UK agree that homelessness is a serious problem and 70% agree that as a society, we do not pay enough attention to homelessness. But people understand that homelessness is a structural issue rather than the fault of individuals and more than half (56%) agree that investing resources to prevent homelessness is a, effective approach. Recent Inside Housing and Homeless Link campaign calls for a critical review of homelessness funding in the UK. We know that local authorities are facing a financial crisis driven by soaring temporary accommodation costs, yet many people experiencing homelessness don’t even qualify for statutory housing support. Beyond the financial pressures faced by local authorities, the system has been so severely affected by cuts and funding shortfalls that the sector is struggling to deliver meaningful outcomes. At the same time, the number of people experiencing homelessness continues to rise. If we know prevention works better than crisis management, why does it remain underutilised? How do we address ineffective spending and shift our priorities? #HousingCrisis #Homelessness #SystemsChange #AffordableHousing #SocialImpact

Short-term funding and constant uncertainty makes it hard to deliver the consistent, long-term support people experiencing homelessness & multiple disadvantage need. It’s frustrating because we know stable, long-term solutions do work, we see it every day. But to make real change, we need a funding system that backs prevention, consistency, and outcomes. The sector simply can’t keep operating in survival mode.

The reality is that homelessness is rarely a choice but rather the result of a complex set of circumstances. Many individuals facing homelessness are actively seeking stable housing but struggle due to barriers like high costs, lack of affordable housing, and systemic issues. **MPs call for cross-government strategy to tackle record homelessness** Another depressing report In a report on tackling homelessness, the Public Accounts Committee said it is “greatly concerned” that homelessness levels are at their highest since records began, reports Social Housing (28/1/2025). The latest data showed that 123,000 households in England were being housed in temporary accommodation as at June 2024. The Committee wants “an overarching strategy…. to tackle the root causes of this crisis” and “Government must learn from the lessons of the past to inform what they will do in the future”. Will stating the blindingly obvious result in a clear, properly financed strategy to address record levels of homelessness? Don’t hold your breathe. #socialhousing #APPGEH #crisis

Yesterday was Youth Homelessness Matters Day. 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23, over one third experienced domestic and family violence. If you have experienced domestic, family or sexual violence, 1800RESPECT can connect you with different types of housing support across Australia. These include places to stay in an emergency, places for longer-term stays, and support with paying rent and bond. You can search our Service Directory (https://lnkd.in/gE9c64M) for housing services near you. 📢 We’re seeking feedback on our draft NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035 We have worked closely with a range of stakeholders to draft a new 10-year, whole of government NSW Homelessness Strategy. The vision of the draft NSW Homelessness Strategy 2025-2035 is to make NSW a place where homelessness is rare, brief and not repeated because people have a safe home and the support to keep it. Flexible whole-of-government Action Plans will sit under the Strategy and set out how we will work to achieve this vision, including standalone plans for Aboriginal people and children and young people. The draft Strategy builds on what we've already heard from sector representatives, homelessness peaks, people with lived experience and government agencies. Our next step is to bring together ideas about how we can implement the Strategy and prioritise focus areas for the first action plan. We will continue to engage with sector groups into 2025 and beyond as we design and implement actions under the Strategy, and our approach to commissioning homelessness services.
