What makes a school 'Good'? (28 responses so far, pretty cool insights already!) In a recent workshop with about 50 passionate and thoughtful school principals from Madhya Pradesh (see image), we spent hours discussing what constitutes and represents a good school. When you close your eyes and imagine a good school, what do you see, hear and feel? It is a lovely question, right? A question worthy of pondering over every few weeks- maybe throw in during the staff meetings. So, I thought of asking you through a one-question anonymous survey with multiple choices. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently joined the seventh 'Pariksha Pe Charcha' event in Delhi. He talked about how parents should not show off their child's report card as their own achievement. Instead, he advised students to compete with themselves, not with others. During the event, the Prime Minister also checked out an exhibition and talked to students who displayed their tech inventions. Key takeaways from "Pariksha Pe Charcha": 1. Don't compare students to others because it can make them feel bad. Instead, talk kindly and listen to their problems. 2. Teachers should be like friends to students, so they feel comfortable sharing their worries. 3. Like a phone needs charging, our bodies need sleep, healthy food, and exercise to keep our minds sharp. 4. Practicing regularly helps build confidence. Focus on your progress, not what others are doing. 5. Break your study goals into smaller, easier tasks to reduce exam stress. 6. Make clear decisions and avoid getting confused. 7. Don't use technology too much. Use it wisely to help you learn and stay healthy. 8. Parents, don't make your children compete with each other. Instead, encourage them to help and inspire each other. The Other Side of the Story: What Godi Media Didn’t Show About Basic Teachers’ Challenges Basic teachers have erupted with volcanic intensity, expressing their grievances all across social media platforms to fight against Godi Media who are presenting only one side of a story. While we've seen one side of the story, this article will reveal the other side. Basic teachers in Uttar Pradesh are primarily posted in rural outskirts where infrastructure and resources are often limited. Many areas lack reliable internet access, making it difficult for teachers to consistently log in and manage attendance and registers online. The Prerna app, which is used for online attendance, further complicates matters with its poor quality and frequent technical issues. The push for mandatory online attendance under such circumstances is not just impractical but unfair to our educators and their students. Further, basic schools in these regions often operate with insufficient human power, lacking essential staff such as gatekeepers and sweepers. This places an additional burden on teachers who must take on multiple roles beyond their teaching responsibilities. With multiple roles and insufficient human resources, requiring online attendance shifts the focus of teachers from delivering quality education to just meeting administrative compliances. In spite of all these obstacles and hurdles, basic teachers are not boycotting online attendance but are demanding flexible attendance policies that account for the realities of rural education. This includes providing the same benefits and entitlements as other state government employees, such as 30 days of earned leave and half-day leaves. Additionally, designating parishad teachers with state government employee status would offer them the necessary support and recognition. A blanket policy that ignores the harsh realities of rural schools is not the solution. We must push for policies that support, rather than hinder, their ability to provide quality education. In conclusion, let us not turn a blind eye to the challenges faced by our rural educators. Let us advocate for change, for fairness, and for a system that truly supports all teachers and students.
