Let's discuss simplification and the digital thread. The concept of simplicity is among my favorites, and I observe solutions increasingly gravitating toward greater simplicity. "Make things simple, but not simpler" is a topic I particularly enjoy. Building simple things is challenging and complex. Let's explore how to simplify the concept of the digital thread. Here are some thoughts: 1- The information flow paradigm for the last 40+ years was disks+folders+files. Networks augmented this paradigm, and now cloud drives have been incorporated as well. Spreadsheets represent another simple concept fitting the "file" paradigm, which can be easily owned and saved. 2- The existing paradigm doesn't suit the complexity of processes and, most importantly, the communication between systems and companies. 3- Meanwhile, the past 20 years have seen the web paradigm grow and establish itself as a powerful mechanism for connecting people, information, and companies. 4- Digital threads are a powerful idea recently entering the PLM world. However, after discussions with many individuals, I'm concerned that equating "digital threads with PLM" could lead to missteps if it adopts the complexity of PLM software developed over the last 20+ years. 5- The current PLM architecture is complex and ill-equipped to support the simple ideals of the digital thread. 6- We need a straightforward recipe for building digital threads (as simple as Excel spreadsheets and websites). 7- We must place data at the center of this digital thread and make it open.
