Senior Workplace Lawyer | Advisory Committee Member - WorkWell Respect Network🏆Best Young Lawyers in Australia Under 35🏆2023 Winner – Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Award for Workplace, Health & Safety
Yesterday I was so pleased to have coordinated Macpherson Kelley's second Southeast Workforce Forum. In 2019, I walked into the Victorian legal sector as a young, Zimbabwean-born, woman of colour, having left Brisbane, battered by domestic violence, but not broken. The fight to be heard left scars, but it also ignited a fire within me – a fire for equality, a future where all humans feel safe and empowered. Yesterday, that fire burned brighter than ever. We tackled critical issues like ESG, ethical AI, and responsible work practices – the building blocks of a stronger, fairer Australia. We weren't just discussing challenges, but as business and industry leaders, we were building solutions together. We heard from Sandra George OAM representing SEBN on behalf of City of Greater Dandenong, Honi Walker from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA), Sami Mäkeläinen from Institute for the Future, Kelly Dickson, Nicole Brown and Sebastian Renato, with the panel being expertly moderated by Luke Gattuso from Macpherson Kelley. It was a collective commitment to a future where businesses don't just succeed, they thrive based on strong values and ethical decisions. This means taking action – fostering responsible workplaces that effectively meet legal obligations, ethically adopting AI, mitigating safety risks, and addressing modern slavery in supply chain not just because the law requires it, but because good business benefits the common good. Yes, for me, it is personal. Lawyers give advice. Leaders make choices based on our advice. By making values-based recommendations, we can pave the way for a better future. #ValuesDriveProgress #ESG #ResponsibleBusiness #WorkplaceRelations

"Make a Difference" 🥱 What does that even mean anymore? 🤔 If you can't show talent ➡️ HOW you as an org/team make a difference, ➡️ WHO benefits from that difference, ➡️ WHAT that difference actually is, Then you're missing a vital step or two. Critically, if you can also show talent HOW THEY WILL CONTRIBUTE to that purpose and how that will ultimately make a difference TO THEM and their careers... well then, just imagine how much better that story is than just "Make a difference" #employerbranding #evp
How is purpose related to your employer brand? Why does your organisation exist - and if you didn’t, what would the impact be? Why should your people care? We covered these topics and more at this week’s Sydney Talent Leaders Forum with our friends at u&u. Recruitment Partners. Swipe across for some key takeaways. As always, what a wonderful chance to connect and share. If you’d like to come along to the next event, email hello@employerbrandingaustralia.com and we’ll keep you up-to-date. #Purpose #Contribution #EmployerBranding

In March, Tile Hill surveyed HR professionals working within local government on their views of the effectiveness of their organisations EVP when attracting, developing and retaining talent. The results from this were then triangulated with Chief Executives and Directors attending TheMJ Future Forum South. What the findings point to is a need to strengthen the employment brand of local government. And for each local authority to better articulate their 'why' in order to help them attract and retain the best talent that will thrive within their organisational values and culture. Without a change in approach, the data points to a major workforce sustainability issue and skills stagnation. In the short term, it points to continued challenges when recruiting. And importantly, a heightened risk of losing talent to those organisations who are more effectively articulating their offer to potential employees, clearly outlining how someone's career will be enhanced through professional development and a better connection to purpose. If you'd like to read more, then the report will shortly be published on our website, or you can read it here. We'd love to hear your thoughts, and to discuss how we can all work together to celebrate the amazing opportunity that comes from working in local government, and how councils can better articulate their employment brand to those in the sector, and those outside of it. Thank you to all those who took the time to fill out our survey. And 'Thank You' to the PPMA - Public Services People Managers Association for sharing it with your members.
