Sunday July 28th, we celebrate #WorldHepatitisDay. Just weeks ago, #Cepheid released the first and only molecular test in the US to detect #HepatitisC virus RNA from a simple fingerstick sample. Our Xpert® HCV is the first molecular test available at point of care, such as urgent care clinics, physician offices and specialty clinics. #HepatitisC can often turn into serious, deadly diseases if left untreated and most people do not know they might be carrying the virus. It is inspiring to see in the video below the amazing work done by WorldHepatitisAlliance on awareness of prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. Our Team Cepheid is proud to provide a Better Way for testing and join the efforts of elimination of this disease!

It's important to recognize the global nature that this disease because 250 million people around the world are living with it, and only a small percentage of those know that they have it. My name is Carrie James and I'm the Chief executive of the World Hepatitis Alliance and we're a network of community based organizations in over 100 countries working to eliminate hepatitis. A lot of times the communities most affected by hepatitis are also the most marginalized communities. They're also the communities that perhaps don't necessarily have a great relationship with some healthcare settings. So community organizations offer a space where they feel comfortable so then they're more likely to trust what happens next if they have a positive diagnosis, so that linkage into care and treatment. So the advice I would give to policymakers in accelerating the hepatitis C elimination is, number one, really being aware of the needs of. Those communities and the other factors that affect their lives and their willingness to access hepatitis testing and treatment. Diagnostics play an absolutely vital role in eliminating viral hepatitis because most people that have hepatitis don't know they have it. And in certain parts of the world, less than 2 1/2 percent of people who are living with viral hepatitis and will probably have their lives cut short are aware that they're living with this terrible disease. We want diagnostics tests that are quick so that they can get their results right away that are simple to use. And of course, we want them to be accurate so they don't have to come back for additional tests later on. And I think what's needed is a commitment by countries and to really invest in hepatitis elimination, invest in testing, and invest in those communities to provide peer support and to be able to have groups that are actually thriving instead of just surviving with hepatitis. There is a cure for hepatitis C, so it's really important that we can test more people and to use this incredible tool that we have to save the lives of all the millions of people living with her.
