How we “see” things really matters. Our vision of the way the world works shapes our attitudes and behaviours and this, in turn, shapes the world around us. But what if we are not seeing things correctly? What if our vision is distorted, misleading or incomplete, and this is damaging our lives and our world? Most people currently see the energy transition as a single, slow-moving, costly, supply-led “burden”. This video is from my keynote speech at the recent ENERGY 2024 Conference. In it, I explore how looking carefully at our actual experience, energy transitions can, and should be, be seen as a series of fast-moving, high-opportunity, modest cost, demand-driven tipping points of uncertain timing. Re-perceiving transitions in this way can promote smart behaviour - smart business, smart policy and smart politics - that can benefit us all.
