🏆⚡️ The winners of the annual B-Photonics Cup have been announced! This science competition among various Belgian schools is an initiative of VUB B-PHOT Brussels Photonics, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Colruyt Group Technics, challenging youth to develop their own gadget of the future based on light technology. The ‘Smart Letterbox’ from the pupils of BA Pitzemburg clinched the top prize. 📬🏆 ⚙️ The B-Photonics Cup tasks students from the fifth and sixth years of secondary education to develop a working prototype of their idea within one year and present it to a professional jury. Participating teams receive a course in photonics and a budget to purchase materials. 🚀 🗣️ This presents a unique opportunity for students to explore technology and creatively solve real-world problems by collaborating as a team. "At VUB, we believe it's crucial to showcase that an engineer possesses far more skills than just mathematics and science," says coordinator Tine De Pauw. "Creativity is equally important. Meet Shengjie (Patrick) Zhai! 🌟 Shengjie first joined UNLV in 2009 as a doctoral student. Now, as an assistant professor at #UNLVEngineering, Shengjie is sending his work to the International Space Station (ISS). 🚀 🛰 The recent project, which involved sending 25 microfluidic devices to the ISS to explore how the zero-gravity environment would affect the growth and behavior of oral bacteria, is an example of the unique research opportunities available to students who work in Shengjie's lab. His lab — which is moving into our new Advanced Engineering Building — is also part of another international collaboration to develop an AI-powered health assistant. The technology merges cutting-edge AI with wearable biosensors for real-time, personalized medical monitoring. (Think J.A.R.V.I.S, the digital personal assistant from the Iron Man movies). Intrigued? 4 Scottish universities have been selected to train a new generation of researchers in critical technologies as part of a major UK Government drive. 10 Scottish Centres for Doctoral Training: * The Heriot-Watt University is leading two of the ten Scottish CDTs, One will focus on photonics in sensing and metrology ;the other centre will focus on net zero industries and deliver a cohort of 100 PhD graduates trained in environmental sustainability and the transition to clean energy, helping to bridge the doctoral-level skills gap in industrial decarbonisation. * The University of Strathclyde University will lead a centre on applied quantum technology, as well as another focusing on training on cyber-physical systems for medicines development and manufacturing. * The University of Glasgow will lead a Doctoral Training centre focusing on algebra, geometry, and quantum fields. * The University of Edinburgh will lead four centres. Two will centre around AI, one focusing on machine learning systems while the other will look into sensing, processing and AI for defence and security. The remainder will focus on offshore renewable energy and quantum informatics.

👨🎓 👩🎓 This is it: the end of the first European Quantum Technology Summer School! Congratulations to the students! 🎉 We are leaving with new projects in mind, thanks to the quality of lectures, work and cross-cultural collaborations. A first edition full of dialogues, co-organised by Netherlands with Quantum Delta NL, Germany with Hamburg Quantum Innovation Capital (hqic) and EIN Quantum NRW, and France with the QuanTEdu-France program. Participants were welcomed at the University of Strasbourg, a member of the QuanTEdu-France consortium. It benefits students, but it also brings a new source of research funding and results in better technology transfer. The article below outlines the success story of Hugo Thienpont, a professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel who has leveraged industry collaboration to build the impressive VUB B-PHOT Brussels Photonics organization that provides optical design and development services for industry, and also produces PhDs who understand how industry works.  (How many PhDs are lucky enough to be exposed to production upscaling before they graduate??? Not many outside of B-PHOT!) And despite their work with industry, they still produce excellent fundamental research. It’s a huge win-win-win for the researchers, their students, and the university because of these three big benefits: ✅  More research funding that actually enables more fundamental research ✅✅ Improved technology commercialization using the ‘flipped tech-transfer’ model ✅✅✅ Industry career preparation for PhD graduates and postdocs Check out the article, and let me know if you have a story about academic-industry collaboration! Proof of Concept For young researchers Bridge The Bridge is a joint programme conducted by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and Innosuisse - the Swiss Innovation Agency. It offers new funding opportunities at the intersection of basic research and science-based innovation, thereby supplementing the funding activities of the two organizations. BRIDGE Proof of Concept helps young researchers to apply their research results and gain the confidence needed to make a market entry. The projects may target innovations of all kinds from all research areas. Eligibility You can apply for a BRIDGE Proof of Concept project regardless of discipline if you meet the following criteria: If you find a Swiss host institution that supports you for the duration of the project Your institution has assured you of its support for the period of the project. You have gained research experience while studying for your bachelor's or master's degree, which you obtained no more than four years ago  You are on course to complete your doctoral studies within the next six months or less. You are working as a postdoctoral researcher, having obtained your doctorate no more than four years ago. You should submit your proposal as an individual and not as part of a group.  BRIDGE covers salary and any costs that are directly linked to the execution of your project to a max of CHF 130,000 per year. It provides funding for your project for twelve months. It may be extended once for a maximum of six months. The submission deadlines for Proof of Concept projects for the rounds are 4 March 2024, 3 June 2024, 2 September 2024 and 2 December 2024. https://lnkd.in/dHhZqkdX

It is that time of year again when graduate students from all over the world gets the chance of receiving one of the most prestigious postdoc grants world-wide. Our group is always interested in attracting the strongest candidates and last year we succeeded in securing two of these grants and we hope to do so again this year. A few examples of research fields we work in and experimental techniques that we use include the following: * Spin torque and spin Hall nano-oscillators (STNOs & SHNOs) based on a very wide range of materials and geometries. In recent years, the SHNO geometry, in particular in large arrays, has proven again and again that it holds tremendous potential for new physics, new phenomena, and new applications. This is one of our most active research areas. We're expanding into new materials, orbitronics, and the third dimension! * Femto-second frequency comb enhanced Brillouin Light Scattering microscopy of blanket films, magnetic nanostructures, and of spintronic devices such as SHNOs, is a new experimental technique that we have recently demonstrated and it has opened up for rich new physics, both in spin wave and acoustic wave generation, control, and interaction. This is one of our research areas with the most potential for new directions. * Ising Machines based on spin waves, acoustic waves, both in macroscopic delay lines and in nanoscopic SHNOs, is a new research direction with great potential also for commercialization. * The Chalmers MC2 clean room is one of the best clean rooms in the world and we continue to optimize our device processes. We now have a excellent track record of how to write these proposals and our Grants and Innovations Office is an additional excellent source of know-how and expertise to help you out.
