I'm pleased to see BBC News have also picked up Dr Deborah Lawson 's inaccessible housing story - please read more at the link below. Here's my full statement made to the BBC, some of which has been picked up in the article; "Deborah’s situation represents a #systemic issue with the UK’s current approach to #accessible architectural design, i.e. the routine application of minimum dimensional standards (specifically the 1500mm wheelchair turning space) for physical manoeuvrability of those using mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, and expecting these dimensions to suit everyone. You wouldn’t create a t-shirt in a size XXS and be able to sell it as a one-size-fits-all option. "What is lacking in Dr Deborah Lawson’s case, aside from the sheer lack of accessible #housing options in the first instance, is her own #voice being heard and #valued as an #expert opinion in its own right, given her own lived experiences. Her situation is embroiled in a bureaucratic stalemate where the agencies involved seem to be unable to take any action simply because her spatial requirements don’t match the basic template approach. "If the council are willing to allocate grant #funding in principle for any large scale changes to her property such as an extension, surely a prudent use of public money is to make sure any proposed #adaptations are actually #effective, and the way to do that is to make sure Deborah’s voice is valued, front and centre, in a #CoDesigned process to create a #practical solution which enables her to live in the same home for the longer term." Deborah - I applaud you for speaking out. Let's hope this recent media coverage becomes a #catalyst for real change. Your personal needs are unique to you. And so should your care. Personalised care for people with disabilities is the best way to offer support services. Although we have a wide range of services that are administered by trained and expert staff...we do not apply care one way. Our ethos guides us to be person-centered. What does that mean? No client needs are dismissed and we are able to add, subtract, and amplify for impact. We adhere to regulation, follow protocol, and place guardrails where needed, but none of that finishes our ability to create care solutions that are unique to you. 24/7 we keep our minds open to how we can further personalise care for the benefit of the individual. How personal would you like your care service to be? Emergencies can strike at any time, any place, and to anyone. When it comes to people with disabilities, emergencies can be even more critical and difficult to navigate. GCDD awarded Naomi Williams a public health workforce grant to help enhance emergency preparedness for people with disabilities and their families. Emergency preparedness for people with disabilities is a priority for GCDD and we are proud of the work that is being done across the state. You can read more about this work in our Making a Difference magazine. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eknssBdt #GCDD #EmergencyPreparedness #DisabilityEmergencyPlanning #DisabilitySafety #InclusivePreparedness

Too often people with disabilities are excluded from consideration in the development of emergency plans. Luckily, my husband Rick McSpadden CEM is an Emergency Preparedness Manager and is much more aware of this issue. #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness #emergencymanagement #disastermanagement #emergencyplanning #emergencypreparedness https://lnkd.in/eYruKEM6

Lots going on in this space at the moment in light of the DRC and NDIS review as well as the interwoven issues within the proposed national carer strategy. Great to see some innovative responses particularly around sustainable housing and bolstering the workforce. Would still love to see greater opportunities for flexibility from our governments including the incorporation of location based responses, taking into account the complexities encountered within population sub-cohorts. A one size model for foundational supports is quite a dystopian objective, will be interesting to see how the engagement processes occur over the course of these reforms.
