Eyes might be the windows of the soul, but 8”x10” inch panes are the windows of historic buildings! 👀🪟Windows represent a big part of a building's historic character. The types of materials, the manner in which it opens, and the number and orientation of the panes all tell us something unique about that building. In this reel, Preservation Architect Jansen Bennett shows us some examples of replacement windows that align with historic character, and others that do not. If you own a historic home with windows in need of repair, we encourage you check out Preservation Brief # 9 produced by the National Park Service. https://lnkd.in/gV5yfQXX #UtahSHPO #UtahHistory #HistoricPreservation #HistoricBuilding #FortDouglas

Climate change is impacting us all in so many ways. This latest news from the CA fires is tough, help if you can. Los Angeles Wildfires Destroy Architecturally Significant Homes Recent wildfires in Los Angeles have destroyed over 12,000 structures, including more than 30 architecturally significant buildings designed by renowned architects like Henry Mather Greene and Richard Neutra. Historic properties such as the Andrew McNally House and the Benedict and Nancy Freedman House have been lost, sparking deep emotional responses from locals and international architectural enthusiasts. Efforts to rebuild are underway, with architects and planners discussing strategies for reconstruction that respect the original designs while incorporating modern, fire-safe adaptations. Concerns remain about maintaining the unique character and community spirit of affected neighborhoods amid potential redevelopment by speculators. https://lnkd.in/dm5YFJsf

Here's a nicely presented and informative guide for energy retrofit in Conservation Areas 👍 though I am curious - does anyone know of any guides for homes with existing maladaptations that are hard to undo? I live in a Conservation Area myself (18th century stone building) and, despite my background in energy, feel a bit hopeless about my own house because a previous owner has internally tanked it in very hard concrete - not being a Listed Building, it's not protected against internal works (plus this was presumably done decades ago - we've been here 10 years). Our aspiration was always to remove it, but in practice we found this too difficult. I've never seen advice specifically for homes with these tricky maladaptations, particularly in terms of your options if you can't remove it, or can't afford to move out for a long period while work is done. Is this a common problem in Conservation Areas, I wonder?
If you live in a conservation area, knowing what can be done to retrofit your home can be tricky. Prewett Bizley Architects, Levitt Bernstein and Etude have been appointed by the ESSA Conservation Area association, with support from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, to create retrofit guides for residents for three archetypes: a Victorian house, a modern house and a mansion block. They are highly visual retrofit guides, providing information on the existing fabric of homes and outlining suitable retrofit measures, using three-dimensional illustrations to highlight key junctions and edges. They provide a useful starting point for residents in the conservation area and beyond. In particular they highlight the key roles of windows and heat pumps. The documents are publicly available: https://lnkd.in/eJvTe62n We would like to thank ESSA and RBKC for this collaboration and hope the guides will prove to be helpful! #retrofit #conservation #netzero
