As green hydrogen prices are unlikely to fall dramatically in coming years, biomethane is gaining popularity as a cleaner substitute for natural gas. Several high-value acquisitions by global energy majors have propelled biomethane into the mainstream. Today, anaerobic digestion is the primary method to produce biogas and subsequently upgrade it to biomethane. However, anaerobic digestion is a relatively slow process and produces biogas with high levels of CO2, reducing its energy density and requiring more energy-intensive gas conditioning steps. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) offer a faster alternative approach to produce both methane-rich biogas and bio-hydrogen. This technology accelerates biogas production, generating biogas with over 80% methane content, 10 times faster than anaerobic digestion, which typically yields biogas with 50-60% methane content.
