Certified Languages International’s Post

Working with a telephone interpreter is not intuitive. Most people don’t work with one as part of their every day jobs but, if you do, follow these best practices to make the experience more effective. • A list of do's and don'ts of working with a telephone interpreter. Dos: let the interpreter introduce themselves, speak directly to the person with LEP, talk in short, 2-3 sentence segments, respect interpreter protocol and judgement, and be patient. Don'ts: assume the person with LEP knows an interpreter is on the line, speak directly to the interpreter, use jargon or overly technical language, ask for the interpreter's opinion, or be hard on yourself if the first session was a little awkward. It will get easier.

When I used your interpreting services it helped letting the operator know the subject matter to better match an interpreter that felt comfortable within the specific subject. (For reference one of our topics was medical interpretations). You can also give a moment to brief the interpreter. For example, we are calling a hospital in x country to see if they provide English translations to patients, and x,y,z services. Your services were amazing and the interpreters were all very talented.

I love this! So many times the client speaks directly to me instead of the patient/customer 🫢
