On July 11, 2024, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, along with Senators Marsha Blackburn and Martin Heinrich, introduced the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act (COPIED Act). This bill addresses the lack of visibility into how artificial intelligence (AI) systems work, the need for transparency in the information used to train AI systems, and the absence of consensus-based standards for the development and deployment of such systems. Under the COPIED Act, AI is defined in alignment with the National AI Initiative Act of 2020. Additionally, 'synthetic content' is described as material generated entirely by algorithms, including AI, encompassing images, videos, audio clips, and text. Moreover, 'covered content' includes digital representations of various forms of authorship outlined in Section 102 Title 17 of the United States Code as outlined in the COPIED Act. This legislative initiative aims to set essential standards and definitions to mitigate the challenges posed by manipulated and deepfaked media, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in AI systems. #AI #Legislation #TechnologyEthics

While AI is transforming healthcare in many ways, one overlooked application is using it to increase access to care and benefits. A panel of experts appointed by the Council of Europe has formulated "Guidelines on the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in journalism." The AI Journalism Guidelines offer practical advice for media organizations, governments, and technology companies. They address various aspects, including the decision to employ AI systems, acquiring AI tools, integrating AI systems into professional practices, and the broader impact of using AI in newsrooms on audiences and society. These guidelines were developed concurrently with the Council of Europe's convention on AI, providing specific application of general principles within the realm of journalism. #artificialintelligence
