Belated Pride reflections 🌈🚀🌟— I’m proud to be building Certify, a company that sincerely tries to live up to our values and that is self-critical when we fall short. Salient for me this Pride is our value: “Be Yourself!” I’ve often felt like I don’t fit in throughout my career. Like I am “unprofessional” because of who I am and how I present to the world. When I joined as the first employee at Certify, I decided to bring my whole self to work. To accept that the company and I may not be a fit if being my unfiltered self is not acceptable. Not only was I accepted – I was celebrated for my merits and embraced as a leader. A couple salient anecdotes about how living this value has played out for us – In a recent leadership summit with our senior advisors, everyone went business formal while I adhered to what I’ll call “loud queer casual” attire. Within the first couple of hours, one of our senior advisors (a tremendously successful healthcare executive) opened up about his sexuality and we formed a strong connection. In another instance, a junior team member with a nontraditional professional background proposed an approach to improving the way we collect info from providers and leadership listened. He was given professional support and the resources to build a team to implement his proposal. That team’s work has substantially improved the provider experience, made our data collection process more efficient as a whole, and introduced a new product development approach now integral to Certify’s long-term strategy. These past couple of years at Certify have been a whirlwind, but I’m so proud when I reflect on how being intentional about living our values and owning up when we don’t has enabled us to grow our business to an 8-figure ARR and to build a wonderfully diverse team of ~200 individuals that bring their whole self to work every day.
