When it comes to client onboarding, the question of where to create new customers - in the ERP or CRM - is a common one. The answer depends on the specific practices and workflows of your business. Here are some considerations: If onboarding involves setting up a new client in the system, defining credit terms, and initiating the order processing cycle, it could be part of the Order-to-Cash process. Therefore, it sits within the ERP. On the other hand, if it's more about lead nurturing, contract negotiation, and account setup, it may align more closely with the prospect-to-lead process. As such, it makes more sense to create new customers in the CRM. This is not just about choosing the correct application. The decision is an operational choice that comes with specific standard operating procedures for specific roles within the organisation. Many organisations take an integrated approach, recognising that client onboarding involves collaboration between sales, marketing, and operations. It could involve marketing and sales activities, moving into the operational and order fulfilment aspects covered by the Order-to-Cash process. Considering client onboarding as part of the broader customer lifecycle management also ensures a seamless customer experience throughout the entire lifecycle. An eventual CRM interface design can come afterwards to automate and streamline the process. The design effort will be easy if done afterwards. Conversely, designing a CRM interface before establishing a clear process for customer onboarding will be difficult and expensive.
