A meaningful way to start the week - by donating blood. In the UK, the need for blood is constant and urgent. I read a statistic that the NHS needs over 1.4 million units of blood, just to meet the basic requirements of patients across the country and over 25% of us will need a blood donation at least once in our lives. Today, I added my 475ml… of blood. It was painless and very easy. Even better, the blood donor centre set up a temporary station in a hotel only a 10-minute walk away from me, so it was super easy. In case you need a little more convincing… One donation can save or improve up to three lives.The whole process takes just about an hour - from the questionnaire to your tea and biscuit at the end, and only 8 min of giving blood. Taking a quick break from helping clients with their EDI to give blood today! While enjoying a post-donation drink, I came across some eye-opening facts from the UK NHS Blood Donation Service that I wanted to share: 1. One donation saves lives: A single blood donation can save or improve up to three lives. A small act with a huge impact! 2. The need is constant: The NHS needs around 5,000 donations every day to support patients across England alone. 3. Diverse blood types are crucial: Some blood types, like O-negative (only 7% of the population has it!), are always in high demand. 4. First-time donors matter: The NHS needs 400 new donors daily to meet demand, as some long-time donors become ineligible. 5. Young donors are the future: Over half of donations come from people over 45, but younger donors are needed to ensure a steady future supply. If you can, I encourage you to find a local donation centre and give blood—it’s such a simple way to make a real difference! PS: The views from the Twickenham donation centre are amazing!

Every year people around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. Without blood donors I wouldn't be alive today. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system.Just one blood donation could save, or improve, up to three lives. In low-income countries, up to 54% of blood transfusions are given to children under 5 years of age. In high-income countries, the largest patient group is 60+ years of age, accounting for 76% of all transfusions. 118.5 million units of blood are donated every year. 🩸 Did you know that nearly half of post-Millennials are from diverse communities, yet a significant portion of blood donations today comes from those over 50? How can we ensure a sustainable blood supply for the future? Patients with conditions like Sickle Cell disease and Thalassemia require specially matched blood, often from donors of similar ethnic backgrounds. That’s why we’re advocating for a new pilot program to provide grant funding for blood centers to reach out to young and diverse donors. This will help diversify the donor base and ensure all patients can get the blood transfusions they need when they need them. 🩸 January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to celebrate the selfless individuals who so generously provide the lifesaving gift of blood donation. This year’s theme of “Celebrating Diversity, Inclusivity and Equity in Blood Donation" emphasizes the importance of having blood donors from diverse backgrounds. Diversity in the blood supply helps ensure that people with rare blood types have compatible blood available to them when they need it. Blood donations play a vital role in the treatment of chronic conditions. For example, people with sickle cell disease – most of whom are of African descent – often rely upon frequent blood transfusions to prevent life-threatening complications and manage extreme pain. Donors in the Black community are almost three times more likely to be a match for people with sickle cell disease.
