[AWC Sharing] Vietnam Ranks 14th Most Favored Country by Expats In 2023, Vietnam has clinched the 14th spot among the best places for expats, boasting an impressive happiness score of 82, surpassing the global average of 72, according to the Expat Insiders 2023 Report. This report, based on responses from over 12,000 participants representing 171 nationalities in 172 countries, evaluated five key factors: Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance, and Expat Essentials. Vietnam excelled in several categories: ✨ Ease of Settling In: Ranking 14th globally, with 83% of respondents feeling welcomed in Vietnam compared to the global average of 67%. 💼 Working Abroad: Ranked 29th, with high scores in Work & Leisure and Salary & Job Security. 💰 Personal Finance: Vietnam secured the top spot for the second time, highlighting the favorable cost of living and financial satisfaction among expats. 🏡 Quality of Life: Although Vietnam was ranked 47th in this category, it's important to note that 83% of respondents were happy with the local friendliness. However, the survey also highlighted areas for improvement, including administrative services and digital accessibility. This report underscores Vietnam's increasing appeal to expats, particularly in terms of quality of life and personal finance, while also shedding light on areas where enhancements are needed. Foreigners Looking to Live in Vietnam Rank it Among the Top 15 Nations The 2023 edition of Expat Insider was conducted based on the opinions of 12,000 expats living in 172 countries and territories. These expats rated various aspects of expat life, such as the local cost of living, availability of housing, career prospects, access to high-speed internet, and the quality of healthcare. This is the 10th year in a row that InterNations has conducted this survey, with nearly 12,000 expats participating. The survey provides an accurate ranking of the best places to live in the world, known as Expat Insider 2023. The participants in the survey represent 177 nationalities living in 181 countries or territories. The report ranks 53 countries based on factors like quality of life, ease of settlement, and personal finance. This year, 53 countries met the survey’s minimum requirements and were included in the overall country ranking, with Mexico, Spain, Panama, and Malaysia at the top. Photo: Vietnam.vn Vietnam is among the Asian countries that received the highest ratings from expats in terms of security. It is also considered a livable place due to its affordable cost of living. In terms of personal finance, Vietnam ranked first, maintaining its top spot from 2022. Over three-quarters of respondents in Vietnam (77%) rated the cost of living favorably, compared to the global average of 44%. In the first half of 2023, Vietnam welcomed over 5.6 million foreign visitors, a 282% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This puts Vietnam on track to exceed its target of welcoming 8 million foreign visitors in 2023. VNAT reported that the country welcomed 975,000 international visitors in June 2023, a 6.4% increase from the previous month. This brings the total number of international visitors to Vietnam in the first six months of the year to nearly 5.6 million, which is 69% of the target set for 2023 and a 66% recovery compared to 2019. Domestic tourism also saw strong growth in June, with 13.5 million visitors, including 9 million overnight stays. The total number of domestic visitors in the first two quarters of the year reached 64 million. The total revenue from tourists in the first six months of the year is estimated at VND 343.1 trillion, a 29.4% increase compared to the same period last year. What is it like living in Vietnam? For expats in Vietnam, renting an apartment or house is the most common living arrangement, especially for those with short work permits and restrictions on property ownership. Expat renters are required to register with the public security office of their local ward or commune. In Hanoi, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is $400 per month but can reach up to $900, depending on location and amenities. It appears that Germany is not so attractive to expats, ranking 50th out of 53 in the best places for expats. In 2014 when the survey first started it ranked 11th. My first thought was that I find that hard to understand, but thinking more about this, I can see that having a German wife and owning a house, makes this significantly easier than it would be if I were here myself on an expat assignment. Then I look back on my time in other countries and run a quick comparison in my head, sure there are frustrations, but 50th out of 53 (that made it onto the list)? However, there are many circumstances in Germany, where the experience is certainly not user-friendly, often very frustrating, restrictive, and time consuming. Many of the mostly Western expats moving out probably weren't the kind of wealthy and industry leading expats that Singapore wants anyway judging by the ones featured in this article: "Expats making plans to leave S'pore, finding it too costly amid soaring prices". As I recently posted, it's a myth that expats in general are leaving Singapore as all our employment pass numbers have actually gone up from before Covid to now. What's true is that junior Western and indeed some low paid Asian expats, who aren't making it big, aren't entrepreneurs and aren't really integrating are the ones finding the costs too much and are leaving. But let’s be frank, we don't really care about them! They are more than being replaced by wealthier and more influential and far more senior Asia expats from China and India, Malaysia and Indonesia, Japan and Korea. You can see that in the numbers of work passes, PR's and citizenships being offered. Details of the work pass numbers are here in an earlier posts that I did: https://lnkd.in/gmMdbczR So all these middle management and yes, they are mostly moaning Western expats, interviewed for this article and ranking Singapore last because of costs just don't get it. Singapore doesn't care about them anyway, because we will always be attractive to far wealthier and far more senior executives working for MNCs, family offices or entrepreneurs. We can only fit so many people into our little red dot so we have to pick and choose who they are and they're not these people: "InterNations ranked Singapore last among 53 countries when it came to the cost of living." But who are they? Mostly Western countries? Mostly junior to middle management? There's people interviewed complaining about buying cars and sending their kids to expensive international schools and living in expat areas. Well yes if you do that then it's expensive! But everyone has the option to send their kids to local school to save $40-50k a year per child. Yes they can, it' a myth that expats can't. But most choose not to. It's a choice. Many are saying that they would prefer to go back to their home country but if they do then they will pay more tax, they will be subject to more crime, their public transport will cost more, their government won’t work etc etc. Many of these people appear to not be committed to Singapore in the first place and are looking for an excuse to move back. Those are not the kind of expats that Singapore wants anyway! I think this article of whiney expats is summed up by this quote from a junior Swiss expat: “Singapore has become very protective over their local people.” Shock horror! The annual survey 📊 of the IT talent pole in Denmark by @digitalhubdenmark and @hbseconomics reveals that 40% of the foreign digital talent employed in Denmark is leaving again ☹️ after just one year. This number aligns with the average statistic that we already know in the expat industry - namely that 40% of expatriations fail. The root cause for 40% deciding to leave Denmark again, according to the article in Berlingske is that the spouse cannot find a job - hence is not thriving. This is unfortunately also a commonly known factor for abrupt (failed) expatriation. The not thriving of the spouse/family. 👎 What can be done? 🤔 "I see that companies are doing a lot for the foreign talent Denmark is hosting. I do also experience and see that we can do more to take into account that for an expat to thrive a more inclusive and holistic approach is called for. From a corporate, a government, and an expat POV. 🏛️ The government needs a clear strategy for attracting international talent that includes a smooth integration of their families, and indeed a plan for the leveraging of the additional skills and talent presented to Denmark when an expat brings his/her spouse and family. 🏭 The companies must take steps to prepare the arriving expat better. By that, I mean making tools, knowledge, and services available that will educate their expats for expat life. Anyone who expatriates, in particular the first time is a novice in expat life - regardless of whether s(h)e is an expert within his/her job. Not being prepared is like attending a traditional tea ceremony without knowing the proper etiquette - you're left fumbling and unsure, and mistakes will happen. 👩🦰 👨🦱 The expat him/herself too must take the time to make use of the tools, knowledge, and services provided to them and from thereon make a plan to succeed". Following an already amazing 3rd place in 2023, expats crown Panama the best country overall in 2024. The majority of respondents originally moved there for financial reasons (15% vs. 2% globally), to retire in Panama (14% vs. 3%), or simply for a better quality of life (14% vs. 9%).
