Following CoreNet Global key note by Simone Heng -Human Connection Specialist I would like to look at impact of loneliness on business: 🌟 A Call for New Workplace Qualities! 🌟 People feel lonely in the middle of a busy workplace ? This paradox of isolation in bustling workplaces is more common than we think, especially as our work environments evolve with technology and new models. Let’s highlight the importance of addressing loneliness alongside emerging workplace concerns like neurodiversity and overall well-being. As creators of workplaces—designers, investors, brokers, and leaders—we must prioritize these human challenges as essential components of a productive and thriving workspace. ### The Loneliness Epidemic at Work Loneliness is often viewed as a fleeting emotion, but it’s a long-term issue that arises when there’s a gap between the relationships we have and those we need. Research shows that about 10-11% of workers often feel lonely, with nearly 45% reporting loneliness at least some of the time. This isn’t just personal; it’s a business challenge that can lead to disengagement, decreased productivity, and increased turnover costs. ### Remote Work Misconceptions You might think loneliness is primarily an issue for remote workers, but studies show that those working onsite often feel closer to their colleagues. The key is fostering relationships, regardless of location. ### Beyond Loneliness: Embracing Neurodiversity and Well-Being Loneliness intersects with neurodiversity and well-being. Individuals with neurodiverse conditions often face unique challenges in traditional office settings, which can increase feelings of isolation. Additionally, neglecting physical and emotional well-being can further disconnect employees. ### Rethinking Workplace Design To tackle these issues, we need to: 1. Align Goals: Ensure that leadership understands the impact on employees, and HR have shared objectives for a supportive workplace. 2. Gather Feedback: Use surveys to understand employee needs and concerns. 3. Set Clear Objectives: Focus on enhancing collaboration, flexibility, and comfort. 4. Integrate Technology Wisely: Use tech to support, not replace, real connections. 5. Encourage Social Interactions: Organize events or activities that promote team bonding. ### A Vision for the Future Let’s envision a workplace where everyone feels they belong, collaboration thrives, and employees are not just productive but truly fulfilled. By addressing loneliness, neurodiversity, and well-being, we can create inclusive environments that nurture human connection. #WorkplaceWellbeing #Loneliness #Neurodiversity #EmployeeEngagement #FutureOfWork #WorkplaceDesign
