Really enjoyed and heartened to read this, Digitally based activities (inc AI) and remote working have been a real positive in enhancing delivery and in a lot of cases, increasing engagement both business and in the delivery arena.
However, this should never replace or undermine the importance and value of being present. There are situations, delivery, moments and times where being 'present' generates real impact in terms of trust, value generation, commitment and collaboration.
There are many times (and my colleagues will attest to this as at times I say this) that the need to see the 'whites of their eyes' is key to taking the relationship, action or outcome to the next level.
This is from showing a participant how important and valued they are; assuring a stakeholder/partner that you are genuine (and more importantly, they are vital); a community that you are committed and transparent or a commissioner that you are the real deal and can be trusted.
Physical socialisation is a key part of the Human DNA and hierarchy of need.
As with most things, Digital, AI and remote solutions are part of a toolkit that can be called upon where appropriate and beneficial, just as a physical face to face meeting has to be balanced against workload, purpose and time.

As organizations grow and live, they develop institutional knowledge: How to do things, and do them consistently.
Many organizations start documenting this information: By writing guides, checklists, and processes, designed to make the information available to present and future team members.
But often, the information THAT the documentation actually exists, and WHERE it is saved gets lost too - resulting in dispersed and outdated information.
This was the challenge Asia Society Switzerland faced at the beginning of last year. To address it, our Operations Manager Manuela Coldesina designed a database that captures all our documentation. We spent the summer of 2023 filling it with 148 entries - covering everything from how to hire someone to how to organize conferences and issuing an invoice.
But here's the important part: Each of the entries in the database had an expiry date. By last week, 121 entries had expired - prompting the team to spend an afternoon going through all of them and ensuring they were still up to date. (This also had the welcome side effect of reminding us what kind of documentation we have, and identify gaps.)
Now all our documentation (ok, almost all) is up to date again - until the fall, when we will review all the expired entries again.

📢The third and final day of the Second meeting of the Advisory Board of the #SantiagoNetwork for #LossAndDamage (SNLD) concluded yesterday in Geneva Switzerland. Here are some of our takeaways from the discussions. 🧵
Yesterday saw the official opening of the Second meeting of the Advisory Board of the #SantiagoNetwork and 15 agenda items discussed throughout the day.
📜See the latest annotated agenda here: https://lnkd.in/eg396JEG
⏰The Advisory Board meeting began with a 🚫closed session focused on the topic of secretariat recruitment after which observers were allowed back into the room.
🗣️Advisory Board members and representatives then discussed the draft documents that have been revised following the comments made during the two days of informal consultation on the 2nd and 3rd of July.
🔗Find the latest versions of the documents here: https://lnkd.in/etDCgJd7
🤔However, at the close of the meeting the only document 📜 that has been adopted was the guidelines for the Designation of Organizations, Bodies, Networks and Experts (OBNEs).
🔗See the latest version from the 3rd of July here: https://lnkd.in/ekpTfYjk
The adopted guidelines define the criteria and procedures to be applied to prospective OBNEs that wish to become members of the #SantiagoNetwork.
✅ The document also includes the membership form which interested OBNEs will use to apply to join the #SantiagoNetwork. With the document now adopted the #SantiagoNetwork Secretariat will begin to implement the guidelines. 🎯
🎯The main objective of the second #SantiagoNetwork Advisory Board meeting was to develop guidelines for receiving and processing technical assistance requests —with a plan to finalise and adopt two documents at this meeting — the guidelines on the designation of OBNEs and the guidelines and procedures for responding to requests for technical assistance. 📜

😢Yet unfortunately, the introduction of a new document 📜 on the results framework of the #SantiagoNetwork for consideration at the meeting —a document that was developed without prior consultation with Advisory Board members— caused significant delays.
📜 This document was needed by the countries who have pledged to the #SantiagoNetwork to follow through on their pledges/contributions.
However, after intensive discussions, it was agreed that the document can not be adopted before the appointment of the Director of the #SantiagoNetwork and having the permanent Secretariat in place.

🌍✈️ Thoughts from the Airport Lounge ✈️🌍
I am an unapologetic extrovert and endlessly curious. I love meeting new people and hearing the stories that have shaped them. Traveling to conferences fills my bucket in so many ways. It doesn’t get much better than getting to expand both my network and my mind. And it doesn’t hurt that I also get the opportunity to explore new cities while I’m there.
I’m currently Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) traveling to the Association of Corporate Counsel Annual Meeting. I’m using the time to follow-up with connections made last week Women Influence & Power in Law (WIPL) and refining my schedule for the upcoming week. I’m looking forward to in-person meetings with friends and colleagues from around the world after months of only virtual contacts.
The power of connection cannot be underestimated for both personal well-being and career growth. When cultivating connections, it’s about quality over quantity. The shared experience of a conference presents an incredible opportunity for growth and a starting point for building lasting relationships.
To maximize that opportunity, consider the following:
🎯 Network Beyond Boundaries: Strike up a conversation with someone beyond your immediate circle and then genuinely listen. Who knows what hidden gems might be unlocked.
📍 Follow-Up and Maintenance: Once the conference ends, follow up with new connections. Regular check-ins and support can transform fleeting interactions into lasting relationships that benefit both parties.
❤️ Connect with Yourself: In the frenetic pace of the conference, don’t forget to check-in with yourself and adjust your behavior accordingly. Pay attention to the signals your body is sending so you can show up as the best version of yourself. And don’t forget to hydrate!
So, whether you’re in an airport or in the office, how can you be more purposeful in your interactions to create more authentic connections? Share your conference connection tips in the comments below.
