UNICEF Aotearoa's teams from across the motu joined the School Strike 4 Climate on Friday, alongside thousands of students, whānau and community members. By standing alongside students in their call for #climateaction, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights. The #climatecrisis is a children's emergency. Over 1 billion children worldwide will be extremely impacted by climate change - yet they are the least responsible for it. Children and young people have the right to be heard on issues that affect them. This is why we launched our climate crisis appeal calling on the Government to: 1) fund a permanent youth climate advisory committee, 2) declare the climate crisis a children's emergency and 3) to sign up to the international Declaration on Children, Young People and Climate Action. Today, almost 1 billion children live in extremely high-risk areas prone to environmental and climate hazards. The repercussions of the climate change crisis are closely linked to issues of child rights, poverty, gender, and conflict, which worsen children’s lives. Despite the obvious impact of the climate crisis on children, safeguarding their interests and rights, particularly in international climate finance, remains woefully inadequate. To address this issue, UNICEF and @sida signed a flexible global partnership agreement in June 2024 that will enhance UNICEF’s ability to deliver results for children around critical services such as healthcare, water and sanitation, education, and others. This partnership aims to ensure that children, and the communities they live in, have uninterrupted access to vital services during climate change-related emergencies.

Did you know 774 million children – a third of all children– face the dual threat of poverty and high climate risk?⚠ Our climate is changing too fast for families to adapt to it and those children already facing hunger and conflict, poverty and discrimination are suffering most of all. Their homes, schools and playgrounds are being washed away by floods. Drought is turning fields, food and jobs to dust. Heatwaves and diseases are stealing young lives. This is alarming, but there’s still time to change course. As the world’s leading experts on children’s rights, we’re working with children to transform their lives and futures through new, climate-smart solutions, across all our work 💪 Leaders and experts at the Bonn Climate Conference must remember children are bearing the brunt of this crisis and must do more to put them at the centre of #ClimateAction! The world has had record-breaking temperatures for the last 12 months⚠️ And extreme heat is currently putting at risk the lives of children in all corners of the world, from Europe and America, to Africa and Asia. A research report released by Save the Children in partnership with Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Born into the Climate Crisis, found children born in 2020 face on average 7 times as many scorching heatwaves as their grandparents! And unfortunately, extreme heat disproportionately impacts those children affected by inequality, poverty and discrimination the most.
