On Tuesday the government announced a $35 million investment over four years in a #CivilSociety Partnerships Fund, a key commitment under the International Development Policy released a year ago. Writing for Lowy Institute, #AP4D’s Heather Wrathall and Jasmine Stephens say the Fund “presents a real opportunity to develop and fund initiatives that nurture civil society ecosystems and to provide flexible, core, multi-year funding to organisations across the region.” “This is a promising step towards addressing shrinking civil space and supporting the strengthening of civil society in our region: a step that can be built upon, which is both good development practice and in Australia’s national interest.” Read their piece at https://lnkd.in/gUtEn7nx. Their article draws on a recent #AP4D paper exploring how Australia can support Pacific Civil Society, Youth and Media in the #Pacific. Read, download and share the paper at https://lnkd.in/g8RyiKNN.

Dedicated to local, business and social development and innovation, in private, public and third sector, since 1991.
" It’s not by chance that cohesion policy was launched at the same time as the single market. Without convergence, the single market can be a problem in future.’Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, said cohesion policy helped weaker Member States make the most of their assets in a competitive single market, ensuring #balanced #growth and #development of the #EU. ‘The EU is a convergence machine, with cohesion policy at its engine,’ she said. The EU, Enrico Letta said, was in the most complicated period of its existence, facing enlargement, the green and digital transitions, migration and an ageing population. Geopolitical changes and threat to the EU’s security on its eastern borders was another concern. New ways had to be found to finance solutions to these challenges. One #danger to the EU’s unity was regions in #development #traps. One-third of the EU’s population lived in places that were slowly falling behind. Poorer prospects for citizens, brain drain, and prolonged stagnation would lead to what Commissioner Ferreira called the ‘poison of political discontent’, or increasing anti-EU sentiment. The antidote, she said, was better cooperation with #local #partners." https://lnkd.in/d46n2HMc

📆 25-31 May - International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories This week, we recognize the vital importance of supporting Non-Self-Governing Territories (#NSGTs) in their journey toward self-governance. As outlined in Chapter XI of the UN Charter, administering powers bear a "sacred trust" to promote the well-being and self-determination of these territories' inhabitants. Since 1946, significant progress has been made in #decolonization, with many #territories achieving #independence. However, 17 territories still seek self-governance today. Let's reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding their #rights and #resources. New blog from our colleague Michael Jennings! Michael has reviewed the manifestos of the political parties in the UK election to evaluate their perspectives on global development. Check out his insightful blog post ⤵️
Global Development; History of Development; Development in Africa; Religion and Development; Global Health and Development. Please note I don't use messaging on LinkedIn. If you need to get in touch, please email me.
What do the political parties say about global development in their party manifestos? With the publication of the last of the main ones (the SNP) today, I've now gone through them all and have written my thoughts and analysis as to what they tell us on my blog. You can read the overall summary here: https://lnkd.in/eFaqVsC2 I then delve more deeply into each individual manifesto in separate posts (follow the links in the summary piece). Elections may not be fought on global development issues, but the policies and vision set out in their manifestos can tell us important things about the future direction of UK aid, and about wider visions of global challenges. I've even looked at the Reform Party manifesto, sorry, Contract, so you don't have to. You're welcome. And yes, I'm going with manifestos not manifestoes.
The signal and the noise: global development, aid and the 2024 UK election manifestos

Democracy assistance is a cost-effective foreign policy tool. It promotes economic growth and limits corruption, thus providing a stable foundation for other types of foreign assistance to succeed. Democracy, human rights, and governance (DRG) programs increase the likelihood that countries will become self-sufficient, no longer depend on foreign assistance, and achieve sustainable peace. To achieve these goals, we’re sharing Choose to Invest #CTIFY25. For each account and activity, it provides a detailed funding history and recommends a baseline funding level for FY2025, drawing upon the collective expertise of InterAction's coalition.

Fact: Supporting #democracy and #democracies worldwide is integral to American foreign policy because more democracies make the world a better place. By supporting the funding of the National Endowment for Democracy and its core institutes, the #DemocracyFund, and the democratic programs the U.S. Department of State and USAID implement, your Members of Congress support a better, more just, and more prosperous world for all Americans.

35/37 29. Central Asian countries We remain resolved to support the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and the right of self-determination of the Central Asian countries. We are committed to enhancing our cooperation with the Central Asian countries to tackle regional challenges, including the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the enduring impact of the situation in Afghanistan, the regional terrorist threat, as well as managing water resources and climate change and promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms. We encourage the further strengthening of regional cooperation, especially in the field of connectivity and infrastructure, including the Middle Corridor, to improve ease of trade between the Central Asian countries, bolster global supply chains, foster trade, forge investment and energy links, provide economic diversification and enhance resilience, while upholding labor rights and environmental protection. We will continue to support the implementation of the socio-economic and political reforms announced in the Central Asian countries. Throughout the region, we support the expansion of civic and political participation, the strengthening of the rule of law, and the safeguarding of human rights. 30. Afghanistan We remain committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan. We condemn the continued and systemic abuses of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Taliban, notably of the political, economic and social rights of women and girls, as well as the rights of members of ethnic and religious minorities. We deeply regret that the Taliban has taken no serious step to initiate an inclusive political process with fellow Afghans regarding the future of the country. Peace and stability in Afghanistan will require the establishment of an inclusive and representative political process which allows Afghanistan to fulfill its international obligations and includes full, equal, safe, and meaningful participation of Afghan women, upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms. We intend to remain vigilant against the risk of Afghanistan serving as a base for hosting or exporting terrorism to other countries. The safe and secure departure of all Afghans wishing to leave the country must be guaranteed, as well as humanitarian access and the possibility to effectively provide humanitarian aid. We support the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary General, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan. We are committed to the swift appointment of a UN Special Envoy in line with the recommendations of the UN’s Independent Assessment and as mandated by Security Council Resolution 2721.
