In the last two days we did the kick-off meeting of the #euEIC Mid- to long-term and systems integrated #energystorage Pathfinder challenge #portfolio. The 32 representatives of the 9 projects belonging to the technological categories of the Electrochemical, Thermal, Chemical looping and storage of energy carriers and Thermomechanical energy storage discussed with experts coming from @JRC, CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, Future Cleantech Architects and scientific organizations how to accelerate their technology innovation journey through sharing scientific and innovation expertise as well as facilities and equipment. Take home messages are: 1) collaboration is needed but to implement it you clearly need to demonstrate that it is a win-win approach; 2) tech to market plans needs to be strategically designed since day one of the deep tech innovation journey; 3) to achieve the ambitious goal of implementing the energy transition we need to design the proper policies and to develop technologies that are environmentally and economically sustainable.

🚀 Waste-to-Energy is going to Space! Can we afford losing recoverable materials and energy embedded in our waste? Waste is a Resource. Additionally, the decomposition of waste in #landfills generates #methane – a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more potent than CO2 on a 100-year perspective and 86 times more on a 20-year perspective. 🌍 Sometimes we underestimate the potential of integrated waste management solutions in our fight towards #climatechange. By redirecting waste away from landfills to treatment routes higher in the waste hierarchy such as recycling and energy recovery, methane emissions can be cut and enormous GHGs reductions can be achieved. 🛰️ The European Space Agency - ESA for example has already conducted precious research on the detection of methane emissions from space and further investigation can only expand knowledge in the waste value chain. Thrilled to see how this new funding opportunity took shape and very pleased to be featuring in tomorrow’s webinar that will launch the Call for Projects during the next months (March-May 2024). We will be introducing ‘Waste to Energy’, a new funding opportunity for teams that intend to develop applications and services relating to the digitalisation and sustainability of the Waste to Energy (WtE) value chain. Areas where satellite data or space-based technologies can play a role include: ◾ Market insights and planning ◾ Operations and monitoring ◾ Clean-up and landfill mining Funding will be provided through ESA's Business Applications and Space Solutions programme (BASS) for 6-month projects called 'Kick-Starts’, which can lead to larger scale Demonstration Projects and Feasibility Studies.
