The food security agenda is inherently related to climate change, natural resources, and ecosystems. As this session keynote presenter, CGIAR Executive Managing Director Ismahane Elouafi shared case studies of evidence-led CGIAR innovations that meet the climate challenge, while also responding to the needs of farmers and consumers and protecting planetary resources. Some examples she presented include Peskas, which uses real-time data on small-scale fisheries to support Timor-Leste fishermen and spatial maps to assess flood and drought impacts as a tool for innovative crop insurance. According to the United Nations, the number and duration of droughts has increased globally by nearly a third since 2000 and may affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. Restoring degraded land and integrating resilience into our food systems is critical to ensuring global food security and protecting ecosystems. In the Midwest, ERI affiliated researchers are investigating the relationship between farming practices and soil health to identify strategies that might boost crop’s drought tolerance. Such research could help farmers adapt to weather extremes linked to climate change, including variable precipitation and heat waves. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gbyP8TEM #WorldEnvironmentDay

President at Emerger Strategies | Founder at Fly Fishing Climate Alliance | Podcast Host at The Sustainable Angler | Board Member at The Sustainability Institute
Climate change is affecting the places where anglers love to fish. “For Tomorrow’s Fish” is a call for a united front of anglers, industry, and other advocates to act now against the unparalleled threats of warming waters, deoxygenation, and extreme weather events that impact fisheries and make it harder to do what we love. The fishing community must advocate for climate-resilient fisheries that are healthy and abundant in the face of climate change. #WeLeadComms honoree Accountability.Fish is mobilizing the power of communication and advocacy to drive change in global oceans governance. Here are their thoughts on today's #WorldOceansDay
The importance of the world's oceans - as a source of food, oxygen, and climate resilience has never been more apparent. With World Oceans Day falling on 8 June, it's also never been more clear that the future of the world's oceans depends on their management being transparent and open. Today's management structures for the world's oceans - the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations - fall far short. Unduly influenced by industrial fishers, they're marked by secret meetings, backroom deals, and a decision-making process that is open to sabotage and abuse. Accountability.Fish is fighting to open up the RFMOs - and prepare the way for an ocean management system that serves all global stakeholders. For more information - and to support our efforts - follow Accountability.Fish. #WorldOceansDay #RFMO

Seaweed, a versatile aquatic crop, could play a vital role in addressing today’s sustainability challenges while offering a solution to future threats to global food security. These future threats include sun-blocking catastrophes, which could lead to agricultural system failure and billions of people facing starvation. Such scenarios motivated us and our research partners to explore the potential of seaweed as a resilient food source in global catastrophic disasters. Did you know that nature can help communities adapt to the effects of a changing climate? When rivers and wetlands are healthy, they can store water for longer during periods of drought and buffer the effects of floods. Rangelands are better able to provide fodder for livestock during extended dry periods if they have been rested and maintained. Using nature to help people adapt to climate change is called Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and is crucial for our work at CSA. One approach that we use to implement EbA in rangelands is to engage in Conservation Agreements with communal farmers to support them in protecting nature in return for incentives that improve their farming practices.
