🌳The livestock sector's role in climate action is gaining attention in Africa. At the 60th Bonn Climate Change Conference, key stakeholders gathered to address the challenges and opportunities for integrating climate action in livestock systems. Despite the controversies surrounding animal-source food production, organizations like the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) are pushing for more inclusive climate discussions. In my view, the idea that emissions from livestock production can impact the environment and alter the climate is fundamentally flawed. This perspective is not based on sound philosophy of science. While it is important to manage our production systems, this belief is misguided and can lead to severe consequences such as deep poverty, malnutrition, supply shortages, and a push towards inorganic production methods. As scientists, we should thoroughly investigate what is truly affecting our climate systems
Increasing #ClimateFinance4Livestock in low- and middle-income countries can: 🌍 Reduce emissions 🧑🏾🌾 Improve livelihoods …and more! Existing methods can help to calculate greenhouse gas emissions, track progress and increase access to and application of #climate finance for #sustainable livestock production. Achieving sustainable agricultural systems | Head of Grazing Livestock Systems | Chair of the Global Farm Platform
Happy to see that 10 selected videos from the last Oxford Real Farming Conference have been released. I’m especially pleased that the video on "What Role for Grazing Livestock in a Warming World?" is available to watch. Our work on Rothamsted Research's TechnoGrazing project and the #NorthWykeFarmPlatform was highlighted. "Reducing livestock production in the UK is commonly cited as a means of tackling climate change by reducing emissions from agriculture. However, in this panel, participants with a depth of practical and scientific experience in livestock farming explore the multiple social and environmental benefits that well-managed grasslands and grazing systems can provide, proposing that ruminants can play a significant role in a climate-friendly UK food system through biodiversity benefits and carbon sequestration. The panellists propose that reductions shouldn’t be focused on extensive grazing livestock but on unsustainable intensive livestock farms." You can watch them at the link below:
