𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝: 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞
Like her Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island ancestors, Amelia Telford is at the forefront of caring for the lands and ensuring a sustainable world. Upon learning in high school that climate change threatened the wellbeing of Indigenous people, she abandoned her plans to be a doctor to become a climate activist.
In Australia, a hot, dry climate is being pushed to the brink by global warming and extreme weather. Since 1910, the country has warmed more than 1 degree, reducing native food, forcing people to leave their land, and leaving communities without essential services. Yet Australia continues to be world’s top exporter of metallurgical coal used to make steel, and the second-biggest exporter of thermal coal, used mainly to generate electricity.
Recognizing the need to empower Indigenous communities feeling the firsthand impacts of climate change, Amelia spearheaded the launch of Seed, Australia’s first Indigenous youth-led climate network, when she was just 19. With a focus on building a movement for climate justice, the organization educates, inspires, and motivates young climate champions to take action locally and nationally.
For her efforts and dedication, Amelia has been recognized as the 2015 Australian Geographic Young Conservationist of the Year, National NAIDOC Youth of the Year, and Bob Brown’s Young Environmentalist of the Year. Now as First Nations Justice Director at the Centre for Australian Progress, she’s helping strengthen the capacity and voice of civil society.
As Amelia says, “…whether or not the coal mines, gas projects or likewise are in my backyard or yours, we’re all facing the impacts of a changing climate.” Like Amelia, we hope you’ll do all you can to fight these impacts so we can all enjoy a sustainable future.
