Saving for your future #retirement is imperative, even more so no for workers with most employers shifting away from defined benefit plans like #pensions to defined contribution plans like #401k or #403b. The biggest difference between the two plan types is that defined contribution plans are driven predominately by the employees, so the savings risk has been shifted from employers to employees. One area of the 401k and 403b plans that is often overlooked or misunderstood is the #Vesting piece. Most employers today will offer some sort of #match or #profitsharing contribution on behalf of their employees who participate in the company plan. Participants in the plan will receive contributions by their employer while working, but the moment they leave the firm, if there is a portion of company match or profit sharing that is not yet "Vested" the employee will lose out on this balance. It is more or less forfeited.
