When I talk about the management rut, I like to equate it to a person walking on railroad tracks. They step on the wood planks in between the rails and walk at a comfortable pace. They’re following the direction of the tracks, looking down, and not seeing much in front of them or anything to the side of them outside of the rails. By doing that, they don’t have the vision to look at the various factors that could be affecting what they’re doing. If they’re not looking at the sky they won’t know if it’s going to rain. If they don’t look behind them, they might not know a train is coming. When they’re walking within the railroad tracks, they are in a rut because they’re not looking at anything other than what’s right in front of them. If you are not taking the time to move outside the rails of the railroad tracks to talk to people, understand their concerns, and work for the betterment of the company, you are not going to be an effective manager or leader. Too many times, people are oblivious to the reality that surrounds them. If you’re walking down the railroad tracks and hear a sound in the distance, you need to make a choice between staying on the tracks or getting off before the train hits you. There has to be a more productive and efficient way of doing this.... This what this particular General Manager thought to himself. You see, he had a few problems on his hands: 1. 600 bales of trash were sitting on-site which were unsightly to the eye 2. They were pulling employees, usually on the weekends, to haul the bales themselves to a landfill 3. The rising costs of bale wire, fuel, fleet maintenance, and more importantly TIME were hurting his bottom line They weren't sure who or where to turn to. They just knew something had to change. During our initial conversations and site visits we discussed other customers with similar situations. We exchanged ideas on what worked and what didn't, and strategically laid out a roadmap for success. Weeks and months of collaboration turned into a system that has helped this customer get closer to their desired results much quicker than anticipated. If you're wondering, yes there are more efficient ways to manage your waste & recycling program. In this case there was pain the GM could see - 600 bales, and there was also latent pain that he couldn't see and didn't know he had until we started having conversations. Do you like having more time to spend on other responsibilities that need your attention? Would showing your leadership team that you helped develop a better solution while increasing the bottom line demonstrate how valuable you are to the company? I saw this quote and had a physical reaction 🤮: “Leadership is your ability to hide your panic from others.” It's attributed to Lao Tzu - an ancient Tao philosopher. This surprised me so much that I dug into it and found it was probably coined by an Australian Rugby coach 🏉. Now, that makes more sense. I can easily see this line of thinking in a sports context, and it reminded me of the film The Replacements. There's a scene where Shane “Footsteps” Falco talks about being afraid of quicksand: https://lnkd.in/g5kFrBfZ “You're playing and you think everything is going fine. Then one thing goes wrong. And then another. And another. You try to fight back, but the harder you fight, the deeper you sink. Until you can't move... you can't breathe... because you're in over your head. Like quicksand.” But, in that scene Shane shows his vulnerability in front of everyone. He talks about it, shares the burden with his team, and makes space for not only his fear, but their's as well. Now that is leadership I can get behind. Communicating about fear is the antidote to panic. Once we talk about it, we can support each other, problem solve, and take action. Together. This is one of the most powerful moments in cinema (fight me on it 😠). And it might be one of the most concise descriptions of what it can feel like working in logistics. At the same time, its an incredible display of what true leadership looks like. I'm not sure what film won best picture in 2000, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't this one ... and that's a travesty. Have you ever found yourself overreacting to a perceived risk? I've certainly been there. When leading a shipyard, we faced a concern about ships potentially toppling over due to te cradles holding these vessels sinking into the soil. The initial reaction was alarm and a costly solution was selected. But then we decided to "go to the gemba" – the actual workplace. Standing next to the ships, the risk felt less daunting. By measuring and observing, we realized our initial assumption was incorrect. The ships were stable! Key takeaway: Never make decisions based on assumptions.
