Just some food for thought... As you'll see in this link, a lot of schools are closing. You may not be aware, but asylum-seeking migrants and their children are in our communities. Many are the least educated or not educated at all. The reality is some are enrolling in our schools. Teachers and students are needing to accommodate (or compensate) for them in their classrooms. What if we separate those who need remediation and assess them for grade level and reopen and staff some closed campuses so those kids can enroll and catch up? Meanwhile, our kids can achieve their education unencumbered by slower students. You can argue all day about whether they belong here but the reality is it could take years to determine their claims of asylum. Kids continue to grow and chances of remediation slips away over time. We need to play the long game. Educate them now so they don't become tomorrow's poverty-stricken criminals that will prey on us or remain a burden on society. While we're at it, teach them good old American values so they appreciate the country they are in. https://lnkd.in/gB28mp2H?

REMEMBER PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE 1950s AND 1960s? Remember when public schools were segregated, when whites fled to the suburbs? Remember the 1970s when the Department of Education came into being with a mandate to make sure that education was equal and accessible for all? But what about education's future should Republicans win in 2024 and implement Project 2025 plans for education. Do you know what Republican plans are for educating America's youth? https://lnkd.in/gzq2PaGd

School exclusions. According to recent data, we’re heading for the most exclusions on record. No doubt there will be some who will blame schools and pedal the ‘school to prison pipeline’ but this simply puts the issue into an endless cycle of accusations and counter arguments. I want to focus on funding and safety. Underfunding often leads to exclusions when schools have no where else to turn. Exclusion should be a last resort but for students who persistently disrupt the learning of others or who are violent towards their peers or adults, exclusion is often the one option left becuase schools don’t have the resources (people) to manage the situation safely. A survey commissioned by the BBC found that 20% of teachers have been physically assaulted by a student. Teachers have a right to feel safe at work. The violent students in question most likely have an unmet need, to meet that need funding must become available. But it isn’t. Endless underfunding of education is leading to schools being backed into a corner where exclusion is the only option left. Schools and their students are being let down. https://lnkd.in/eMEzVkfN

Record Year for School Suspensions and Exclusions England saw a record 790,000 school suspensions and 9,000 exclusions in 2022/23, a significant increase from previous years. Persistent disruptive behaviour was the main cause. The long-term consequences for these children (and society) is terrifying. Being excluded from education (temporarily or permanently) is a huge risk factor for kids being drawn into Criminal and Sexual Exploitation, gangs, and other types of dangerous and abusive situations. We all need to get our heads together and sort this out Education Minister Stephen Morgan called these figures a "wake-up call," highlighting the system's failure to meet the needs of children with additional needs. Experts stress the need for early intervention and better support for schools. The new government aims to address these issues with measures like mental-health specialists and free breakfast clubs.
